House of the Dragon season 2 finale questions, answered (mostly)

Ah, me mate! Let me tell ya ’bout this mess we’re in, eh? Gwayne’s rage, fierce as it may be, ain’t got a chance against Criston’s despair. The lad’s heart is heavy, and that’s a weight no amount of fury can lift.

The final episode of the second season of House of the Dragon was quite bustling… despite many storylines being left unexplored at the end. It featured unexpected revelations, fresh character introductions, and an abundance of intricate plot elements that hint at a series of thrilling confrontations in season 3.

It’s understandable if you found yourself feeling confused amidst all the details, given the extensive montage that concluded the episode. During our team discussion about the episode, several questions arose — such as understanding certain characters’ intentions, mapping out the current positions on the board, and even questioning whether something was overlooked.

Regardless of which group you’re part of, here’s a collection of potential questions that may arise following the season finale, or for those who might be reading this in the future, it serves as a refresher on where we ended before diving into season 3.

Wait, so where is Otto Hightower?

House of the Dragon season 2 finale questions, answered (mostly)

It seems: In a subterranean chamber. Earlier in the storyline, Aemond sought out the small council to trace Otto’s location, as there had been no news of him since his removal as the king’s hand (with Alicent being informed that he was unreachable).

Towards the end of the season 2 finale, we observe Otto confined within prison walls, illuminated primarily by torchlight. The specific location of his incarceration is ambiguous; while King’s Landing is a possibility, it remains uncertain who issued the order for his detention at this juncture. However, it’s evident that he appears to be in a state of distress.

What’s the deal with Sharp Point?

In the course of events depicted in this episode, it becomes clear that Aemond destroyed Sharp Point after learning that Rhaenyra was training additional dragonriders. For those who may have pondered the military significance of Sharp Point in relation to the conflict, it’s worth noting that its strategic value isn’t particularly high.

As a gamer delving into this fascinating world, I’ve found myself often drawn to the rich history of a particular town. This place has been a stronghold for House Bar Emmon and played a significant role during the era when Aegon the Conqueror roamed the continent. In the upcoming season, it seems that the Bar Emmon saga might gain more attention as rumors swirl about their potential resistance to declare for the Greens following Aemond’s actions. It’s crucial to remember that Sharp Point, a nearby location on the map, is closest to Dragonstone Island. This proximity could suggest that Aemond’s aggressive actions are aimed at catching Rhaenyra’s attention, even if there’s no clear strategic advantage to the violence.

How did Gwayne know about Criston and Alicent?

House of the Dragon season 2 finale questions, answered (mostly)

Over the past couple of weeks, both in our reality and the Game of Thrones universe, I haven’t seen much of Gwayne or Criston. But now, they’re on their way to Harrenhal, aiming to seize it from Daemon. So here we are, with a sudden turn of events: Gwayne’s threatening behavior towards Criston due to his relationship with Alicent feels unexpected for me and the audience alike.

It seems plausible that Criston’s actions were something Gwayne learned through soldier chatter (when Gwayne initially brandishes his sword toward Criston, the soldiers around them appear to be eavesdropping). Regrettably, Gwayne’s rage couldn’t overcome Criston’s despair.

How many wives does Lohar have?

Given that Tyland Lannister and Lohar were both involved in building the boat, it seems unlikely that there were too few for him to handle.

Where is Hugh’s wife?

One might expect that Rhaenyra is still in King’s Landing among the struggling commoners. It makes sense why she wouldn’t invite all the Targaryen bastards to showcase their skills against Vermithor, but it seems a bit heartless of Hugh not to even mention her name once in this context.

Why did Aegon leave with Larys?

House of the Dragon season 2 finale questions, answered (mostly)

In an unexpected partnership, the wounded monarch and Viserys’ trusted advisor (also known as Allicent’s previous admirer) have formed an alliance, leading them to flee King’s Landing at the end of the final episode. The motive behind their escape is hinted throughout the series: Aemond, who is growing increasingly power-hungry, wishes for his older brother’s demise to reduce competition for the throne. With Aemond plotting and Rhaenyra amassing more dragons, King’s Landing poses a significant danger for Aegon. However, some viewers might be taken aback by the depth of their relationship.

One aspect of their bond is their shared experiences with physical disabilities, a relatively recent development for Aegon. Larys has been guiding the confined king in adapting to his new situation, and there seems to be a strong affinity between them. However, it’s possible that their connection originated from Aemond, who dismissed Larys as a potential Hand. This rejection prompted Larys to form an alliance with Aegon instead.

Who is marching where/where do we leave everybody?

Preparations for battle are underway across Westeros. Tywin Lannister is sailing over the Narrow Sea, bringing his mercenaries from Essos who were victoriously won, aiming to disrupt Corlys Velaryon’s blockade in Blackwater Bay. However, it appears that Rhaenyra, accompanied by her newly acquired dragon riders and her husband Daemon, who has recently allied with her again, are also en route to King’s Landing. Meanwhile, the Starks are crossing the long bridge at The Twins following Jace’s agreement with House Frey.

Despite the show providing a lot of details, there are still some unanswered questions that need to be addressed before the war starts. For example, we don’t know the exact location of Ser Criston Cole’s troops during his altercation with Alicent’s brother. Additionally, it seems like the whereabouts of Aemond and Vhagar are constantly changing in this episode. We also understand that Daemon has gathered a large force around Harrenhal, but we’re not sure where they’re heading or who’s leading them since Daemon is currently occupied with dragon matters.

Why did Daemon swear allegiance to Rhaenyra in the end?

House of the Dragon season 2 finale questions, answered (mostly)

Harrenhal is where Daemon spent most of this season, learning from spirits (and maybe Alys Rivers) about himself, confronting his past mistakes, and pondering why he’s so drawn to power.

Everything leads up to the final scene where he experiences a vision in the God’s Wood about future events – specifically, the Dance of Dragons, a peek at the Others, and Daenerys reintroducing dragons to Westeros. This revelation convinces him to fully support Rhaenyra, bringing comfort not only to her and Ser Simon Strong, but also to them.

Is Ser Alfred Broome fucked now that Daemon bent the knee?

In light of Daemon now being fully on Team Rhaenyra, it’s not a shock that he departed during Daemon’s call to arms with the troops. After all, this is Westeros…
