Em Rusciano has been rushed to hospital after developing a rare and life-threatening condition.
The 47-year-old former radio personality shared a surprising health issue on her Instagram Story Monday, explaining that doctors are unsure what’s causing it.
‘I’m in hospital. I’m ok,’ she wrote.
The reason for all this is just absurd. People at Austin Hospital are talking about me – it’s like something straight out of a medical drama like ‘House,’ and I’m at the center of it all.
Em shared that she had rhabdomyolysis, a rare and serious condition where damaged muscles break down and release harmful substances into the blood.
Em explained they developed rhabdomyolysis, or ‘rhabdo,’ where damaged muscles – specifically their biceps – released their contents into the bloodstream.
Those cells are causing extra strain on my kidneys, so doctors are giving me a lot of fluids through an IV. I need to have my urine output measured every hour to monitor how well my kidneys are working.
Em added that she developed the condition after going ‘too hard at the gym.’
I’m feeling alright, but I pushed myself too hard at the gym and ended up with some muscle soreness. It happens!
She also revealed that she had become quite the curiosity among hospital staff.
She described doctors visiting her simply out of curiosity, explaining they’d never encountered a case like hers before. She felt like a spectacle, comparing herself to a new exhibit at a zoo.
My creatinine levels were extremely high, at 45,000, when a normal reading is under 5,000. I realize feeling proud of that isn’t appropriate.
In a subsequent slide, Em admitted that pull-ups were the culprit.
Okay, so I recently had a bit of a scare – I ended up with rhabdomyolysis, or Rhabdo, after doing a lot of pull-ups. Honestly, my biceps are still pretty swollen, and it’s taking a while for me to get full range of motion back – I can’t quite straighten my arms yet. It’s a good reminder that even with regular exercise, you need to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard!
In addition to her health issue, Em shared another difficult experience she had while in the hospital.
She posted a quick video of herself looking confused while a buzzing sound filled the air.
‘The man next to me is flat out shaving,’ she captioned the clip. ‘In his bed. Sir, no.’
It comes after Em recently confirmed that she had split with her husband Scott Barrow.
The radio personality announced in her new memoir, Blood, Sweat and Glitter, released in October, that she and Scott are now legally separated.
Em says getting diagnosed with ADHD at 42, followed by autism the next year, and then experiencing perimenopause, dramatically altered her life.
She explained that her relationship with Scott had shifted, which she admitted wasn’t unexpected, as she had gone through a significant personal transformation.
She shared that they officially separated in November 2024, and added that she’s now doing much better than she was when the split first occurred.
Em, who has three children with Scott – Marchella, 24, Odette, 18, and 6-year-old Elio – said they will continue to raise Elio together.
She explained that despite the changes, they remain a close family, simply in a new form, and continue to support each other.
‘We just kind of said this isn’t working for either of us, and we’re going to do this our way.
We mostly see divorces and breakups portrayed on American television, and they’re usually dramatic and unpleasant. This situation is completely different.
‘He will always be my family as the father of my kids.’
