Season three of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will begin building the friendship between Spock and Lt. Kirk

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours navigating the final frontier, I am beyond excited about the upcoming season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The friendship between young Kirk and Spock is a cornerstone of the Star Trek universe, and the promise of seeing it develop in this new series is simply thrilling.

In Star Trek: The Original Series, the bond between Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) is legendary material. This connection is deeply etched in our minds with the scene from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where Spock succumbs to radiation sickness after saving the Enterprise. In his final moments, he poignantly expresses, “I am and ever shall be…your friend.” It’s a heart-wrenching scene that continues to stir emotions, despite our knowledge that Spock was resurrected in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

In the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we can anticipate fostering a friendship between a younger Spock (Ethan Peck) and Lt. Kirk (Paul Wesley). As per a recent interview with Screenrant (via CBR), Paul Wesley, who received a Saturn Award for his exceptional performance as a guest star, hinted that season three contains “some fantastic material” which will commence the development of their relationship.

Wesley characterizes these individuals as polar opposites, yet he also likens them to the harmonious duality of yin and yang in a positive manner. This observation was particularly evident in The Original Series. Spock, hailing from Vulcan, consistently addressed problems from a logical standpoint, whereas Kirk grappled with human feelings that didn’t always align with logic.

We have some amazing stuff in Season 3. It’s a slow burn. You don’t want to explore everything out of the gate. It’s nice to have the characters slowly get to know one another because that friendship is so important to this series,” Wesley said. “It’s really nice to sprinkle hints of what’s to come. Hints of how connected they will be, even though they could not be more opposite. Kirk and Spock are very yin and yang in a good way. We explore that. The short answer is yes. We very much explore that in Season 3. But I think we intentionally let it slowly build.

Paul Wesley

Discovering that Strange New Worlds will be exploring the relationship between these two iconic characters excites us even more for the upcoming season, as their friendship has a significant place in Star Trek lore.
