As a huge Spider-Man fan, I was really excited when the first trailer for Brand New Day dropped! It was packed with action and teased a bunch of different villains. But honestly, even before the trailer, there’d been so much chatter online and leaks from the set. It sounds like there’s at least one big bad guy they’re keeping completely under wraps, and a few other characters who might cause trouble too. It’s making the wait for the movie even harder!
The trailer for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse didn’t feature Sadie Sink either, leaving her role a mystery. If the speculation is correct, her character could be incredibly powerful, and a potential transformation of another key actor might dramatically change the story.
Tarantula
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer included hidden references, or “Easter eggs,” for comic book fans, featuring two key villains. One of these was Tarantula, and the trailer cleverly recreated the cover of his very first comic book appearance.
The cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #134 featured a scene of Tarantula attacking Spider-Man on a boat, with a police officer firing at him. A moment in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer perfectly recreated this cover as a live-action shot, and it was a truly impressive detail.
Tarantula appears in Spider-Man comics during a period when Spider-Man was also facing off against the Punisher for the first time – a connection that’s reflected in the movie trailer and the film itself. Unlike many Spider-Man villains, Tarantula doesn’t have any superpowers; he’s simply a highly trained and skilled fighter.
Boomerang
The trailer featured Spider-Man battling Boomerang, alongside the reveal of Tarantula. This fight mirrored a comic book cover, though it wasn’t Boomerang’s first appearance – he originally showed up as a villain in the comic Tales to Astonish #81 back in 1966, before becoming a Spider-Man foe.
This cover was actually a copy of the one from The Amazing Spider-Man #345. The original had a yellow background and didn’t show a city, but those elements were added for the trailer. What makes Boomerang’s appearance especially interesting is that, in the comics, he lived with Peter Parker as a roommate—and neither of them knew who the other one was!
Fred and Spider-Man have always had a bit of a strange dynamic, and his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be a playful nod to that history. While Boomerang doesn’t have any superpowers, he’s incredibly skilled at throwing boomerangs, a skill he developed as a former professional baseball player.
The Punisher
The Punisher isn’t exactly a villain, but he is a killer, which disqualifies him from being a hero. The trailer suggests Spider-Man and Frank Castle have some kind of connection, and it looks like a tense one – Frank even points a gun at Spider-Man.
During a fight, Spider-Man simply wants the Punisher to leave, but their methods of fighting crime are very different, making them reluctant partners at best. The Punisher first appeared in a Spider-Man comic book (Amazing Spider-Man #129), initially targeting Spider-Man because the Jackal gave him false information.
While the Punisher is certainly a formidable character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he’s not truly a villain. He’s more of an annoyance to Spider-Man than a real danger.
Man-Spider (Rumored)
Okay, so the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer got me thinking – there was a rumor going around about Man-Spider appearing, but we didn’t actually see him. It all came from a leak, so it could be totally false. But honestly, there were enough little hints in the trailer – little things happening – that I’m still wondering if it’ll end up being a bigger part of the story. I’m keeping my eyes peeled!
The image of Peter Parker wrapped in webbing, like a cocoon, is a direct reference to a classic comic book storyline. In that story, Peter began to lose his human side and transformed into a spider-like creature – a monstrous form with extra arms and a frightening appearance.
The trailer strongly suggests Peter Parker is losing himself and increasingly becoming just Spider-Man, effectively erasing his personal identity. If the film depicts a physical transformation – like him becoming a ‘Man-Spider,’ as warned by Bruce Banner due to the dangers of altered DNA – it could pose a serious threat to the hero himself.
Tramell Tillman’s Character
Tramell Tillman is a key actor in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but his character’s name hasn’t been revealed yet. He narrates part of the trailer and seems to be a very powerful figure. While his identity is a mystery, there are clues, and at least one strong indication of who he might be.
It’s unclear who Tillman is, but he’s likely involved with the Department of Damage Control (DODC). The DODC has become increasingly significant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since first appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and they’ve recently created problems in Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man. It appears Tillman’s role involves bringing Spider-Man on board to work with the department.
Tillman is a major threat because he has the backing of the government and commands a large number of officers. What’s even more concerning is that he could be William Metzger, a character from Marvel comics who leads an organization hostile to mutants, potentially turning the DODC into enemies of the X-Men in the future.
Scorpion
When the Scorpion was revealed as a villain in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fans were thrilled, especially after seeing him attack Spider-Man with his powerful tail in the trailer. This is exciting because he first appeared briefly after the credits of Spider-Man: Homecoming and we haven’t seen him since!
During that scene, he confronts the Vulture while he’s in prison, explaining he’d previously battled Spider-Man and was trying to uncover his true identity. The Vulture denies knowing anything about it. Michael Mando, who played Scorpion in that same scene, is back to reprise the role with more action this time around.
We don’t yet know how important the Scorpion will be in the story, but fans are hoping he gets a significant role and isn’t just a brief appearance in a flashback, like we might see with characters like Boomerang and Tarantula. Mac Gargan, who becomes the Scorpion, is a truly formidable villain – he’s even taken on the role of a villainous Venom in the comics, making him one of the most dangerous threats around.
Tombstone
Tombstone is the main villain added to the cast of the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day film, and he wasn’t featured in the first trailer. Actor Marvin Jones III will play Tombstone, having previously voiced the character in the Spider-Verse movies and played Tobias Whale in the Black Lightning TV series from the Arrowverse.
This version of Tombstone differs from the animated Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series (which connects to the MCU). In that show, Lonnie Lincoln is a high schooler, but here, Tombstone is closer to his original comic book character – an older, established crime boss. He’s anticipated to be a key figure in the criminal underworld featured in the new movie.
He’s become incredibly strong and dangerous, but Wilson Fisk, as mayor, still appears to be the one in control. If Damage Control is backed by the government, Tombstone might decide to handle things independently, though there’s not much evidence to support that idea right now.
The Hand
I was totally shocked to see The Hand pop up in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer! They haven’t been around since the old Netflix Marvel shows – you saw them in everything from Daredevil to The Defenders. It’s cool to see them back, and even though Daredevil isn’t in this movie, the Punisher is, and he definitely knows how dangerous these ninja assassins are!
The main thing to understand is that these warriors are all controlled by a demon known as the Beast – a different character than the one from X-Men. They’re a huge force of dedicated ninja fighters who are willing to sacrifice themselves for their beliefs, making them Spider-Man’s greatest challenge during the ‘Brand New Day’ storyline.
The movie features several instances of mind control, which connects directly to the Hand organization. If it loosely adapts the “Shadowland” comic book arc, the Hand could become a serious and widespread danger throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Hulk
The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day featured Bruce Banner, but not his Hulk persona. This is notable because previously, Banner had become the intelligent Hulk and rarely reverted to his human form. Now, it appears he’s working as a college lecturer.
Bruce Banner was already hinting at the Hulk Inhibitor Device he showed in the scene after the credits of Shang-Chi. But the biggest speculation surrounding the plot is that Bruce Banner will transform into the Hulk during the movie and lose control, reverting to his older, more destructive form.
If Bruce Banner transforms into the Savage Hulk again, he’ll become an incredibly dangerous and destructive force, essentially unstoppable. It will fall to Spider-Man to calm him down, and the reason for Hulk’s rage may be tied to the central conflict in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Sadie Sink’s Character
Many fans are curious about what role Sadie Sink will play in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. Although she wasn’t clearly visible in the trailer, there’s a possibility she appeared briefly in two different scenes without being fully shown.
Someone was spotted sitting in a chair with equipment attached to their hands. Another person was seen from behind, wearing a hoodie. The most popular speculation is that Sadie Sink will be portraying a younger version of Jean Grey, a well-known mutant character from the X-Men series, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If these events are connected and the DODC is pursuing Jean Grey, it might explain why the officers were acting under mind control. It could also account for the Savage Hulk’s loss of control if Jean Grey is somehow influencing him. Ultimately, if the Beast is manipulating Jean Grey to control the Hand, she would be the most dangerous character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
