The Serpent Queen season 2 episode 4 shifts many puzzle pieces into place (Review)

As a dedicated fan who’s been following The Serpent Queen since its inception, let me tell you, this week’s episode was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The intrigue, the drama, the suspense – it had it all!

A great deal unfolds in the storyline of The Serpent Queen season 2, episode 4, as several key pieces fall into place. This week’s installment, titled “Judas,” continues from where we left off last week in episode 3, with Hercules sustaining a severe head injury after being struck by a rock. Here’s a recap of the latest events in season 2 and my thoughts on this week’s episode. [SPOILERS AHEAD]

As a gamer, I found Hercules’ demise particularly distressing because, as portrayed in the episode, he was more innocent and kind than maybe some of his other siblings. Reminds me a bit of Charles, who met an untimely end way back in season 1. Each new episode only serves to highlight Anjou’s unpredictable and erratic behavior. He’s becoming quite the headache for his mother, indeed giving her plenty of trouble. And poor Catherine, she definitely has her work cut out for her.

Directly stated, his house arrest at the episode’s end seems justified given his actions. Yet, the praise he’s receiving from some devout Catholics for his actions against the Protestant man last week is unwarranted, in my opinion. However, it appears that his role will remain significant within the narrative, adding another piece to the puzzle of this season’s larger story arc.

The missing part of the puzzle is Louis Bourbon and Queen Elizabeth. Watching Minnie Driver portray the queen is delightful. I’m eager for more of her this season! She’s intelligent, tactful with her words, and knows how to manipulate men. For instance, she manages to persuade Louis to sign a secret document without him even having time to read it first. Later, she removes her clothes while he’s still signing, which I suspect will lead to trouble for him.

Finally is Sister Edith once again. The cliffhangers left with her are always great, and this one was no different. Aabis tries to poison her, but somehow Edith is in on this secret and has both of them drink from the cups Aabis apparently poisoned. But they’re both fine and nothing happens to either of them. Now Aabis is either a believer, or wants to continue tricking Edith. I don’t know yet. And I wonder who and why these drinks were not actually poisoned. Edith is an interesting character and antagonist so far.

In summary, I find that Episode 4 of Season 2 in The Serpent Queen series progresses the narrative smoothly and seems to be building towards a significant event. Right from its opening scene, where Catherine was encircled by deceased individuals at the table, it’s evident that something will push her to her limit. While this episode might not have delivered any major surprises like earlier ones, it effectively moves the story forward as expected. I’d rate this installment a B. Stay tuned for our review of Episode 5 next week!

The Serpent Queen season 2 airs/streams Fridays on Starz.
