Section 31 star calls the movie "hybrid" which doesn't sound too promising

As a lifelong Star Trek fan who has spent countless hours exploring the galaxy with Kirk, Picard, and Sisko, I must admit that the news about Section 31 leaves me feeling rather… conflicted. The teaser trailer certainly caught my attention, but the modern music and moody vibe, coupled with Omari Hardwick’s description of the film as “dirty” and “edgy,” has me questioning if this is truly the Star Trek I know and love.

In a nutshell, the initial response to Section 31, the first Star Trek movie on Paramount+, has been somewhat critical following the unveiling of its teaser trailer. Fans have expressed displeasure over the blend of contemporary music and dark undertones, suggesting that it might not resonate with traditional Star Trek enthusiasts. Omari Hardwick, an actor set to star in the upcoming production (known for his role as Power), shared some thoughts during a Variety interview at San Diego Comic Con that may not ease these concerns.

There’s still that marriage, the hybrid of the sort of formality that we grew up watching, and yet it still has this dirty, sort of edgy take on it—where a sense of humor is allowed. That was just amazing for us.

Transforming a Star Trek film into a blend that retains some familiar aspects but also incorporates new, grittier elements might leave fans wondering if they should watch it. For a die-hard Star Trek fan, terms like “gritty” or “edgy” aren’t typically associated with the franchise. Although it makes sense that these words could describe Section 31, the movie appears to veer away from the optimism and heroism that are synonymous with Star Trek.

Section 31 of Starfleet is often criticized for its questionable actions, which means we don’t always get the usual Star Trek experience. These agents sometimes operate in murky areas, making us wonder if they’ve stepped over a line. This ambiguity can cast doubt on characters, as seen in episodes like “Tuvix” from Voyager and “Doctor, Doctor” from Enterprise. Such instances make it challenging for these characters to be viewed favorably by fans.

As a gaming enthusiast, here’s my take: Am I in for more unclear situations when we get to Section 31? If so, am I ready to embrace that uncertainty? Honestly, I’m excited about watching the movie, but I’m not quite sure what to anticipate. Maybe it will keep me guessing and thrill the rest of us fans!
