MrBeast’s new controversies, explained
As a long-time fan of MrBeast, I must admit that the recent string of controversies surrounding his brand has left me feeling rather bewildered and disheartened. While I have always admired Jimmy Donaldson’s ability to entertain and inspire through his philanthropic endeavors, the series of scandals that have surfaced over the past few months have cast a shadow over the MrBeast empire.
1. The brand of MrBeast, run by Jimmy Donaldson, is one of the most prominent on YouTube. It stretches beyond just videos to include ghost kitchens, chocolate bars, big competitions, an Amazon reality show, and large-scale philanthropic events. While some admire his entertaining content and charitable works, others criticize him for having a growth-oriented, profit-driven mindset, often referred to as “CEO brain,” and argue that his style has been excessively mimicked by aspiring YouTube creators, potentially negatively affecting the entire platform.
Lately, a series of contentious issues have made the MrBeast project appear more exposed than before. Donaldson has provided only occasional comments, but these problems stemming from the initial conflict have escalated into several heated debates. Some of these have lingered for quite some time without resolution, while others are more recent. Regardless, they hint at potential flaws within Donaldson and his organization that might not be immediately apparent based on their public achievements.
Last month, a dispute erupted, which was followed by numerous other allegations. On July 21st, content creators started sharing claims that Ava Kris Tyson, a long-term associate and friend of Donaldson, had sent inappropriate messages, crude jokes, and explicit comments to a minor fan around eight years ago. These communications were exchanged between Tyson, who was 20 at the time, and the fan, LavaGS, who was 13, on a public Discord server. Both parties have acknowledged these interactions took place. Afterward, they continued to maintain an amicable online relationship for several years, with LavaGS acting as Tyson’s Twitch moderator.
In public statements, LavaGS expressed that he didn’t view the incident as grooming behavior. On the other hand, Tyson issued an apology through their X account regarding the matter.
As a devoted admirer, I wish to express my sincere apologies if any of my past actions or words may have caused pain or discomfort to anyone. It was never my intention to upset you. Reflecting on recent occurrences, it seems appropriate for both parties that I take an indefinite break from everything related to MrBeast and social media to prioritize my family and mental well-being.

On the 23rd of July, Tyson revealed her decision to part ways with the MrBeast company. The following day, Donaldson shared a statement, disclosing that they had engaged an external investigative firm to scrutinize all relevant evidence.
Over the past couple of days, I’ve found myself deeply troubled by the severe accusations against Ava Tyson’s online actions. I stand firmly against such abhorrent behavior.
In light of these events, I am actively seeking a neutral third party to carry out a comprehensive investigation, ensuring that…

After the uproar, more individuals voiced their criticisms towards Donaldson and his business. This criticism encompassed various sources, such as a YouTube video from an unidentified individual who claimed to be a former employee of MrBeast. In this video, they expressed concerns about a YouTube channel of such magnitude aggressively marketing itself and attempting to foster loyalty among its audience, many of whom are children.
The video portrays MrBeast as a person who deceives, suggesting that his giveaways are frequently a trick involving smoke and mirrors, intended to excite and attract children. The video also brings up an incident where Donaldson faced controversy by urging customers to participate in volunteering for the stocking, organizing, and monitoring of Feastables chocolate shelves, ensuring the promotion was as successful as possible.
Under the pseudonym “DogPack404,” a person claiming to be a former employee posted on X that they received a cease-and-desist letter from the MrBeast company regarding a particular video. This individual also mentioned there would be further developments to come.
The video explores a wide range of topics, focusing particularly on the potential dangers associated with marketing towards children, which is heavily controlled in traditional media platforms but not as strictly monitored on YouTube. It’s also worth noting that according to the video, contestants for MrBeast’s popular game-show type videos are often selected from Donaldson’s personal and professional networks, and significant portions of the events depicted are staged to enhance the final product.
An employee from the current team of MrBeast addressed the claims in this video on X, though their response was not comprehensive. It does, however, challenge some of the allegations about staged videos and participant qualifications. We attempted to get a comment from Donaldson and the MrBeast crew, but did not receive a reply before our deadline.
The main debate revolves around “Beast Competition,” an Amazon reality TV show being filmed in Las Vegas, which draws inspiration from the popular Netflix series “Squid Game.” This show involves physical challenges undertaken by contestants over several days. However, Vital Vegas, a local news and entertainment source in Las Vegas, has reported conflicting claims about the filming of “Beast Competition.” A source told Vital Vegas that they believe the production is disorganized and not prepared for the scale of the project, making decisions as they go along. They also expressed concern about the small medical team on site, stating they were overwhelmed.
According to Vital Vegas’ report, competitors claim they are being deprived of necessary medication, struggle with obtaining sanitary items such as pads and tampons, and are served unappetizing mush for food.
As a dedicated follower of Austin Green’s YouTube channel, I recently came across his well-researched 19-minute video delving into the allegations swirling around Beast Games. This comprehensive video serves as an easily digestible recap of different contestants’ claims, their corresponding responses, and a clear depiction of how this controversy has unfolded over time.
It’s rare for any single incident to bring down the empire of MrBeast. But when several incidents occur close together, it shines a brighter light on Donaldson, leading to increased scrutiny of MrBeast’s entertainment empire. The discussions that have followed raise questions about the long-term viability of MrBeast’s expansive business. Time will tell if Donaldson decides to respond to these criticisms or if he simply lets the social media storm blow over.
