Madonna revisited a classic scene from her 1984 song “Like a Virgin,” recreating the famous gondola moment with Julia Garner, who will portray her in an upcoming biopic.
Madonna, 67, and Julia Garner, 32, have been shooting scenes for the second season of the series, The Studio, in Venice for the last week.
While filming on Venice’s famous gondolas, the actors playfully reenacted a scene from a well-known music video.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, Madonna shared a clip of the two lip-syncing to the classic track.
For the photoshoot, everyone wore a coordinated look: black and white striped shirts with black coats and blue jeans.
Madonna captioned the post: ‘Like A Virgin……again and again.’
The iconic music video, originally directed by Mary Lambert and filmed partly in Venice, inspired this remake as a tribute to the singer’s beginnings.
The song was a major hit, spending six weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album also performed incredibly well, selling over 10 million copies in the United States and more than 21 million copies around the world.
Madonna is returning to acting after a 20-year break with a role in the new film, The Studio.
Her most recent significant acting work was providing a voice in the 2006 animated film Arthur and the Invisibles, directed by French filmmaker Luc Besson.
She previously won a Golden Globe for starring in the 1995 movie musical Evita.
According to her IMDb profile, the most recent time she appeared on screen as an actress was in a 2003 episode of the popular show Will & Grace, where she made a brief cameo.
Oh my gosh, Seth Rogen is just a genius! He didn’t just star in this amazing new show, ‘The Studio,’ he actually created it with his own two hands! He plays this totally frazzled studio boss, and it’s hilarious. And the cast? Ugh, perfection. Ike Barinholtz is brilliant as always, and Chase Sui Wonders and Kathryn Hahn are just chef’s kiss. Seriously, everyone needs to watch this show!
Catherine O’Hara, a beloved comedic actress, sadly passed away in January at the age of 71 after fighting rectal cancer. She was a standout performer in the series.
Okay, so I nearly lost it last week when Madonna posted on her Instagram Stories! She was on a gondola – a GONDOLA! – and you could just see she was reading a script. It totally confirmed she’s doing this new project, and honestly, I’ve been obsessively refreshing every website since, desperate for more details. It was a tiny glimpse, but it was EVERYTHING!
It was captioned: ‘The Italian Job.’
As a lifestyle expert, I remember Madonna bursting onto the scene in the 80s – she was everywhere! She became a huge star in both movies and music at the same time, and one of my favorite early roles was alongside Rosanna Arquette in the hilarious film, ‘Desperately Seeking Susan.’ It really launched her into the spotlight!
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Arquette remembered that the singer, originally from Michigan, became incredibly famous globally right around the time they were filming in 1985.
She admitted it was a really challenging and stressful time, but she managed it well. She wasn’t famous internationally at that point, but achieving global stardom happened as they worked on the project together.
Arquette remembered that she was already successful, but he was truly struck when he saw her featured on the cover of Rolling Stone while they were on set – it was a ‘Wow!’ moment for him.
Julia will soon be playing Madonna in a long-awaited biopic about the star.
She reassured everyone last September that the project was still moving forward, despite some earlier setbacks in production.
‘I can’t say too much about it, but yes, it’s a work in progress,’ she told W Magazine at the time.
Madonna has been persistent in her years-long effort to make a movie about her life.
In 2023, she began working on a biographical film titled ‘Who’s That Girl,’ a reference to her popular 1987 movie and song with the same name.
The film originally began as a project with Diablo Cody co-writing the script, at the time known as Little Sparrow.
However, the hitmaker pivoted her focus to zero in on her international Celebration tour.
In 2024, she co-wrote the screenplay with Erin Cressida Wilson and hoped Jennifer Garner would star in it. Later that year, she publicly expressed her frustration online about the difficulties she was facing getting the film made.
After facing difficulties in Los Angeles and hearing from industry professionals about the obstacles to getting her film made, she came to the realization that she would consistently encounter challenges in life.
The famous performer explained she’d been developing the project for four years, but many people told her to simplify it and reduce its scope.
Let’s be real, life hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park for me. And honestly, I’m trying to find the silver lining – it’s pushed me to be incredibly resourceful and think differently. My path has always been a bit unconventional, and because of that, I’ve learned I can’t always rely on traditional methods. I have to forge my own way, and that’s okay with me.
