The Battle of the Gullet and 3 things we don’t expect to see in the House of the Dragon season 2 finale
As a longtime fan of George R.R. Martin’s intricate world-building, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and a twinge of sorrow upon hearing about the latest developments in House of the Dragon. On one hand, the revelation that Rhaena might claim Sheepstealer is indeed a thrilling prospect, adding another layer to the complex tapestry of characters we’ve come to love and hate. However, the possibility that Nettles may not grace our screens feels like a bitter pill to swallow – much like how maester Aemon once said, “Love can be as sharp as a new valyrian steel.”
The final episode of “House of the Dragon” season 2 is here, leaving many viewers guessing about what’s next, as only those who have read the book “Fire & Blood” (or peeked at the leaks) might have a clue. Although the trailer for episode 8 provides an exciting glimpse into what’s to come, there are still numerous unanswered questions. Even readers of the books find themselves uncertain about what twists and turns the show may take next, as it has introduced new plotlines and rearranged events, making it tough to predict where things might be headed.
However, certain elements from George R.R. Martin’s Targaryen chronicles, while highly speculative, seem unlikely to appear in the final episodes.
It appears that as we approach the end of season 2 of “House of the Dragon,” there are four elements from “Fire & Blood” that we don’t foresee making an appearance. Some of these events might not unfold until season 3, while one seems to have been entirely excluded from the series so far.
WARNING: Spoilers for Fire & Blood are below.
The Battle of the Gullet
In the sequence of events depicted in “Fire & Blood” during the Dance of the Dragons, the Battle of the Gullet follows directly after the Sowing of the Seeds. Given that the series has rearranged certain events to create a more compelling storyline, it’s reasonable to assume that the battle won’t take place in episode 8. It’s conceivable that season 3 could start with the Battle of the Gullet, contingent on how the season 2 finale unfolds.
The Battle of the Gullet plays a significant role in the Dance of the Dragons, as a key figure meets their end. I’m hoping the creators will keep this battle largely unaltered, because while it would be painful to lose this character, it could provide a fitting and powerful farewell, which they seem to need after the latest episode hasn’t been well-received by fans.
In the upcoming second season of “House of the Dragon,” showrunner Ryan Condal hinted that they filmed two massive sequences, which are now part of the series. These include the Battle at Rook’s Rest and the Sowing of the Seeds. During San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, Condal confirmed this information before a screening of episode 7. As a result, there won’t be another significant battle in the season finale. Instead, viewers will need to look forward to more action in the next season.
Nettles
It appears that the character Nettles from “Fire & Blood” may not be included in “House of the Dragon”, a development that has left many fans disappointed. Since Nettles is a beloved figure among readers and her inclusion was highly anticipated, it’s no wonder that people are upset about this change. In the books, Nettles was one of the dragonseeds who formed a bond with the dragon Sheepstealer after feeding it regularly. It seems that in “House of the Dragon”, the writers have opted to assign this storyline to Daemon’s daughter Rhaena, who is currently residing in the Vale instead.
From what we’ve observed so far, Rhaena could potentially acquire Sheepstealer, which is exciting for her character, but regrettable because it seems Nettles may not appear in the show anymore. During an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Condal was vague about Nettles, choosing not to reveal any details at this time, although he did hint, “Keep watching.” At this stage, however, it appears that Nettles’ character might no longer be part of the storyline.
The Fall of King’s Landing
In one of the key events of the Dance of the Dragons, known as the Fall of King’s Landing, the blacks managed to regain control over the Iron Throne. Some viewers were hopeful that this event might occur in House of the Dragon season 2, given a recent promotional scene showing Rhaenyra and Daemon reuniting. However, although these two characters are expected to unite in the season 2 finale, it won’t happen in King’s Landing just yet. We’re still early on in the narrative’s unfolding.
In “Fire & Blood,” a series of additional conflicts unfold swiftly following the Battle of the Gullet. Meanwhile, Criston’s forces, accompanied by Aemond and Vhagar, become engaged in the Riverlands. Simultaneously, Daemon with Caraxes encounters Rhaenyra and Syrax at King’s Landing. Their swift actions result in the recapture of the city, and Rhaenyra ascends to her rightful position on the throne. This moment promises to be truly awe-inspiring when it finally unfolds in the third season.
Aegon’s recovery
In the storyline of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Aegon’s healing journey has been a secondary plot since the Battle of Rook’s Rest, and here’s a warning: His condition isn’t improving rapidly. At least, his path to recovery appears prolonged in “Fire & Blood.” The series might expedite things for the sake of the story, which I’m fine with. Tom Glynn-Carney has delivered an outstanding performance this season, so let’s see more of him speaking! However, it seems unlikely that Aegon will miraculously recover in the Season 2 finale.
Over the past few episodes, there have been subtle inclusions of Aegon’s gradually improving health, such as in episode 7 where Larys coerced him into attempting to walk. However, despite the series hinting at his recovery, it’s important to remember that this process won’t happen suddenly or instantly.
Much like Sunfyre, Aegon’s dragon, won’t make a comeback until after season 2 ends. Despite Aemond yearning to match Rhaenyra’s dragon force, Aegon won’t be an option for assistance yet. He’s currently having trouble walking and in the book, his recovery takes about a year. As we often see with adaptations, expect some differences from the original story, so hopefully, Aegon’s tale will gain momentum earlier in season 3.
As a long-time fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I must admit that the second season of House of the Dragon has been a captivating journey so far, even though some critics have criticized it for moving at a slow pace. However, having witnessed the consequences of rushed storytelling in previous adaptations, I appreciate the writers’ decision to take their time and weave the intricate tapestry that is the Dance of the Dragons.
Don’t miss the House of the Dragon season 2 finale on Sunday, Aug. 4, on HBO and Max.
