Disney has a track record of successful sequels, consistently finding audiences for follow-up films. But one recent sequel, in particular, far exceeded all predictions.
After a huge success in cinemas, Zootopia 2 will be available to rent or buy digitally starting January 27th. You’ll be able to find it on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, even though it’s still showing in some theaters.
Zootopia 2 will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 3rd. While a release date for Disney+ hasn’t been announced, it will probably be available to stream around the same time as the physical copies.
The digital version will come with extra content, including footage of the recording process, scenes that didn’t make the final cut, and interviews with the cast and crew.
Disney has consistently found success with its sequel films, and this has been particularly true lately. Films like Frozen 2 (2019), Moana 2 (2025), and Inside Out 2 have all proven more popular than the originals. Even Zootopia 2, released nearly a decade after the first Zootopia (2016), became a major success.
The film broke records as the highest-grossing animated movie ever released, earning $1.7 billion worldwide and becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time. It’s also one of only five Walt Disney Animation Studios films to ever reach over $1 billion in global earnings.
The first film earned $1.02 billion globally on a $150 million budget. The second film had the same $150 million budget but performed even better, bringing in $1.74 billion worldwide. This total exceeded the earnings of the live-action Lilo & Stitch ($1.03 billion) and surpassed Avatar: Fire and Ash ($1.31 billion).
The first film was incredibly well-received, earning a 98% approval rating from critics and 92% from audiences. The sequel, Zootopia 2, continued this success with a 91% critic score and a 96% audience score, and also earned the ‘Certified Fresh’ and ‘Verified Hot’ designations.
Jared Bush and Byron Howard returned to direct the Zootopia sequel, with Bush also writing the script. The film features the voices of returning cast members Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde, and many others including Shakira, Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, Nate Torrence, Don Lake, Bonnie Hunt, and Jenny Slate. New to the cast are Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Patrick Warburton, Quinta Brunson, and Danny Trejo.
Will Zootopia Continue?
In Zootopia 2, rookie police officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde investigate a puzzling new case after Gary De’Snake’s arrival throws the city of Zootopia into chaos. Their investigation leads them to unfamiliar areas, and their teamwork is pushed to the limit as they work to solve the mystery.
The director hinted at potential future stories, mentioning a post-credits scene that suggests possibilities. However, he emphasized that the team is currently focused on celebrating the success of the current project. While fans are speculating about what happens next with Judy and Nick, the director acknowledged they’re the core of any continuation, but cautioned that not all fan theories may be possible. He expressed excitement about the audience’s enthusiasm and engagement with the characters.
Zootopia 2 will be available to stream on digital on Jan. 27.
