‘Project Hail Mary’ Directors Interested in Reviving Their Pitch for ‘The Flash’ in the DCU

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are keeping their ideas for a Flash movie under wraps, hoping to potentially revisit the project in the future. The duo are highly respected filmmakers known for popular movies like 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and their recent work, Project Hail Mary. They also contributed to the screenplays and production of the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. Back in 2018, they developed a pitch for a Flash movie within the DC Extended Universe, intended to star Ezra Miller.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Phil Lord mentioned that their initial version of The Flash movie was quite different from the one released in 2023. While Lord and Miller didn’t share many details about their take on the film, Miller described it as a detailed and well-liked concept. Lord explained they were hesitant to reveal specifics because they hope to revisit the idea in the future, potentially as part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

Before the release of Batman v. Superman in 2016, Warner Bros. started planning its own interconnected universe of films, which would become known as the DCEU. In April 2015, they hired Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to write and potentially direct a Flash movie, initially aiming for an April 2018 release. However, just two months later, Lord and Miller left the project after being chosen to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story for Lucasfilm and Disney. Later, in June 2017, Lord and Miller were removed from Solo during production due to disagreements with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and writer Lawrence Kasdan.

When directors Lord and Miller left the project, it marked the beginning of a long series of setbacks for The Flash movie. It finally premiered in June 2023—nine years after Warner Bros. first announced it. Unfortunately, the film didn’t perform well at the box office and signaled the end of the original DC Extended Universe (DCEU) before James Gunn relaunched it as the DC Universe (DCU). Gunn stated in 2025 that characters from the previous universe, like The Flash and Aquaman, wouldn’t appear in the new DCU for at least two years, probably because they had just appeared in the DCEU films.

After the disappointing box office performance of The Flash movie, Warner Bros. faces a risk if they try to make another one. They could follow the approach taken with Lanterns, which is attempting to revive a classic DC hero after a previous film failed. However, the success of directing duo Lord and Miller – both with the Spider-Verse movies and the strong opening weekend of Project Hail Mary – suggests they might have enough reputation and fan support to convince audiences to give another Flash movie a chance.
