Queensland Premier Steven Miles calls for Hamish Blake and Andy Lee’s lifetime Olympic ban to be lifted: ‘They’ve served their time, let them back in!’
As a die-hard fan of Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, I can’t help but feel ecstatic about their quest to overturn their lifetime ban from the Olympic Village! These two have always been the kings of mischief, and their antics at the 2012 London Olympics are no exception.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles supports Hamish Blake and Andy Lee’s effort to overturn their lifetime ban, which prevents them from visiting the Olympic Village.
Earlier this month, it was disclosed that the radio personalities have been permanently barred from the famous village due to overstepping boundaries during the 2012 London Olympics.
These individuals managed to secretly enter the Olympic village due to an error in their application for access, which prevented them from initially gaining entry. However, they were later discovered by security and permanently barred from future participation.
However, as the 2024 Paris Olympic Games commence, a petition has been initiated to remove the lifetime ban imposed on these athletes. Queensland Premier Miles has expressed his support by joining this cause.
The petition originated from the morning show hosts of Triple M Rush Hour, namely Liesl Jones, Liam, and Dobbo. Miles publicly stated that he has endorsed the petition, expressing his views explicitly.
Addressing the three hosts of their radio program, Miles expressed his strong feelings, stating: “To my ears, this issue appears to be a clear injustice. I’ve become aware of your campaign efforts, and I’ve already added my name to the petition. I’m ready to take additional steps to urge the International Olympic Committee for necessary changes.”
By 2032, we’ll undoubtedly be involved in making decisions about the plans as well. I believe that Hamish and Andy have paid their dues, and now is the right time for them to rejoin us again.
Eagerly, I found myself moved to inquire from the Premier himself, wondering if perhaps he had any influential ties within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that might be leveraged to lift the current suspension.
Certainly!
‘He’s pretty powerful in the IOC and spends a fair bit of time in Queensland.’
Liesl said: “I believe he would agree. After speaking with him multiple times, I feel confident that John Coates is fully supportive.”
The petition has already garnered 253 signatures including some high-profile names such as Will Anderson, Adam Reynolds, Mark Geyer, Grant Hackett and Tom Rockliff.
Hamish and Andy have shared that they went slightly overboard during the 2012 Olympics in London.
During an appearance on “The Rush Hour” on Triple M, alongside hosts Liesel, Liam, and Dobbo, Andy shared the story of him and Hamish inadvertently creating mayhem when they secretly entered the Olympic village.
Originally, the presenters were scheduled to interview multiple Australian Olympians prior to the 2012 Games’ commencement. However, an unfortunate error led to their inability to gain access.
Andy had accidentally submitted an incorrectly completed security application showing his birth date as ‘that day’s date’, meaning they were unable to enter and interview the athletes.
However, an unnamed Aussie came to the duo’s rescue and smuggled them into the Olympic village.
In an unexpected turn of events, I managed to slip past another person and we secretly entered, creating a significant security lapse at a moment when they were striving to demonstrate their security measures were robust, as Andy confessed.
He shared that him and Hamish were having a great time interacting with Australian athletes, only to be discovered by the Olympic security team for their trickery about 90 minutes afterwards.
In a different account, Andy shared that they forcibly moved us into individual spaces for questioning. Throughout this process, we remained silent. Then, the head of security entered the room.
Following a thorough interrogation by an astute Australian security chief, Andy acknowledged that they were to permanently exclude themselves from the Olympic Village.
They acknowledged that it wasn’t a moment they could be most proud of, as their actions led to the Australian Olympic team losing some visitor passes due to punishment.
Andy expressed, “I wasn’t overly pleased with how things turned out,” he added. “It’s regrettable that some individuals didn’t get to be a part of it.”
Liam suggested starting a campaign to remove the ban for Brisbane 2032, and Andy jokingly said they might try to secretly enter again.
