Heartbreak for Hugh Jackman as influential figure from Hollywood star’s childhood passes away

You see, Mr. Brian Buggy was more than just a music teacher to our beloved Hugh – he was an inspiration, a mentor, and the very essence of what it means to nurture talent.


After a significant person from Hugh Jackman’s youthful days passed away this week, he finds himself deeply saddened.

55-year-old actor from Hollywood posted on Instagram about the passing of his old music teacher, Brian Buggy, who was 83 and sadly passed away on Tuesday.

Together with a treasured picture of Mr. Buggy diligently conducting an orchestra, Hugh posted his sorrow and honored the impactful mentor by expressing his grief.

He shared that it was Mr. Buggy who initially nurtured his passion for music, a passion that he carries into his professional life. He has demonstrated his vocal abilities in productions such as Les Misérables and The Greatest Showman.

‘I want to pay tribute to Brian, OAM,’ Hugh penned in a touching message.

At Knox High School, he held the position of the music director. Over the years, he instilled in me, as well as countless other students, a profound affection and exhilaration for music.

The affection I’ve carried throughout my lifespan is profound, forged by his teachings brimming with humor. He had an uncanny ability to captivate any audience, making them feel as if they were in the palm of his hand.

‘To Brian’s family, I send my deepest condolences, immense respect and unending gratitude.’ 

Hugh grew up in Sydney, went to Pymble Public School initially, then later discovered his passion for music and acting during his time at Knox Grammar School.

Born in Brisbane in 1939, Mr. Buggy held the position of Director of Music at Knox Grammar School for more than three decades, serving from 1975 to 2007.

During his time, he helped mentor a variety of youth orchestras to achieve their musical goals.

During his esteemed career, Mr. Buggy additionally served as the Music Director for several well-known musical productions that graced Australian stages, such as “Fiddler on the Roof” and “My Fair Lady.”

In 2007, he became the conductor of the Sydney Youth Orchestra Philharmonic.

Sydney Youth Orchestras also paid tribute to Mr Buggy in a heartfelt statement.

The team expressed gratitude that Brian had conducted the SYO Philharmonic for fourteen years, making him our inaugural Conductor Emeritus in 2021.

Brian is admired for his generosity, humor, extensive musical expertise, and deep-seated enthusiasm for education, as well as his fondness for delicious cakes and engaging conversations.

Mr Buggy was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 1998 for his long-standing services to music.
