The fate of CBS’ new FBI spinoff series, CIA, has now been decided for season 2.
CBS announced that the show CIA will return for a second season, thanks to strong ratings from its first episode. Paramount reported that 8.4 million people watched the premiere across both television and streaming platforms within the first week.
The show’s first three episodes saw a 39% increase in ratings on Mondays at 10 p.m. compared to the same time slot in fall 2025.
The production of CIA has faced some challenges. Initially, David Hudgins, the showrunner for FBI: Most Wanted, was leading the series, but he was later replaced by Warren Leight. Leight eventually left the show, along with executive producer Eriq La Salle. Mike Weiss, who previously ran the original FBI series, then took over as showrunner for CIA.
The recent issues led to delays in making the show, so CBS moved the premiere of CIA from fall 2025 to mid-season.
The series CIA follows CIA Agent Colin Glass, played by Tom Ellis, and FBI Agent Bill Goodman, played by Nick Gehlfuss, as they team up for a top-secret joint task force. Though they have very different personalities – Glass is a bit of a rule-breaker while Goodman prefers to follow them – they work together in the shadows to solve crimes both within the United States and around the world, all while staying out of the public eye.
Along with stars Ellis and Gehlfuss, Necar Zadegan and Natalee Linez also appear in CIA. Zadegan, who plays Nikki Reynard, will make a guest appearance on FBI on March 30th, assisting the team with a double homicide investigation. This episode will also feature the return of Maggie Bell after a difficult personal loss.
Dick Wolf, the creator of hit TV series like Law & Order and One Chicago on NBC, later developed the FBI franchise for CBS. FBI premiered in 2018, starring Missy Peregrym. Two years after that, FBI: Most Wanted was launched and ran for six seasons. Then came FBI: International, which aired for four seasons.
As a big fan of the FBI franchise, I was excited to hear about CIA, which is actually the third show to spin off from the original. It’s great to see so many familiar names involved as executive producers – Wolf, Weiss, Ken Girotti, Paul Cabbad, Nicole Perlman, David Chasteen, Anastasia Puglisi, and Peter Jankowski are all onboard, which definitely bodes well!
