Smallville’s Michael Rosenbaum teases animated sequel talks
As a lifelong fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of comic book adaptations, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of a Smallville animated series. Michael Rosenbaum‘s teasing us with tantalizing tidbits about the project is like a supervillain luring us into a trap… but this time, it’s a trap filled with hope!
Michael Rosenbaum, best known for his portrayal of Lex Luthor in the series “Smallville”, has given fans a glimpse of potential new developments for an upcoming animated sequel. Excited fans wait with bated breath for further announcements as the actor, affectionately called “Albie” by some, tantalizes us with hints about the project’s progress.
At the 2024 Nashville Comicon, Rosenbaum shared exciting news about the upcoming animated sequel to Smallville during a panel led by Comicbook. He mentioned that they had created some preliminary animations for a pitch at one point. Additionally, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are in charge of this series.
Emphasizing the significance of timing in show business, the actor and podcaster who was ranked first on TV Guide’s 2013 list of “The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time” and is known for portraying Martinex in the Guardians of the Galaxy films shared his thoughts during a recent event:
“Tom and I are developing an animated version of Smallville, which we’re striving to bring to life. It’s going to require some time, but the original creators of Smallville are involved and keen to contribute. When the timing is right, we’ll present our idea. We’ve been working on it, and have some initial animation that looks fantastic, thanks to a talented collaborator. If we can make this happen, it would be amazing!”
Over the past few years, there has been a revival of popular TV series being continued, such as X-Men ’97. Similarly, Batman: Caped Crusader can be considered a reincarnation of Batman: The Animated Series. Therefore, it seems particularly apt for Smallville to take flight from the Kent Farm and venture into Metropolis and beyond in animated form at this point in time.
As a seasoned film industry professional, I can say that having a great script is certainly crucial for any project to succeed. But from my own experiences, I’ve learned that getting a project off the ground often depends more on the people involved and their connections than just the quality of the script alone. So, while Rosenbaum and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn have a fantastic script in hand, it remains to be seen whether they will receive the green light for production. Ultimately, it’s a game of connections, persuasion, and timing – factors that can only be influenced by the people behind the project.
