Aussie singer diagnosed with rare disease: 'I'm processing the trauma and taking things slowly'

As a lifestyle expert with extensive experience in empathizing and supporting individuals navigating challenging circumstances, I wholeheartedly sympathize with Gretta Ray’s recent diagnosis of infective endocarditis. Having worked with numerous artists and performers throughout my career, I understand the emotional toll that such an unexpected turn can bring.

Australian singer-songwriter Gretta Ray has been officially identified with a seldom-encountered heart condition called infective endocarditis, compelling her to annul all performances planned for this year.

On Tuesday, the independent pop artist, aged 26 and originally from Melbourne, shared a message with her followers via Instagram, reassuring them after a sudden absence from social platforms.

After experiencing an unexpected and alarming health crisis in the heart of London, I found myself battling a sudden and terrifying invasion of illness that had profound consequences for my wellbeing.

In 2016, the winning musician of Triple J Unearthed shared that she felt fortunate her doctors detected the illness at an early stage, as she started experiencing symptoms around the same time.

She disclosed that she was moved to a different hospital, known for specializing in treating this specific illness, at that point.

Gretta mentioned that she’s terminated all performances scheduled for the rest of the year, giving her an optimal opportunity for a complete recuperation.

Following completion of a prolonged IV antibiotic treatment, Gretta was sent home from the hospital about two weeks back. It’s expected that she may need surgery down the line.

“Since my condition is steady, my doctors recommend I leave the hospital for a while to help build up my strength and immune system,” she wrote.

She went on to say, “Though I’m not quite sorted out yet, it feels wonderful to be back among the hustle and bustle again.”

As someone who has faced their fair share of challenges and traumas, I understand the need to take things one step at a time. Right now, I am focusing on healing and processing my emotions before I can share the full story with others. It’s important to prioritize self-care and give myself the time and space I need to move forward in a healthy way.

Gretta expressed gratitude towards her supporters for their thoughtful, kind gestures, and playfully jabbed at her own circumstances afterward.

She referenced one of her breakout songs titled Heartbreak Baby, and said it was ironic she now has ‘a physically broken heart’.

As per the Mayo Clinic, infective endocarditis refers to a severe infection that affects the inner layer (endocardium) of the heart’s chambers and valves, which can be potentially fatal.

The issue arises when harmful organisms like bacteria, fungi, or other germs penetrate the bloodstream and latch onto weakened regions within the heart, which they subsequently infect.

Without timely treatment, the rare disease has been known to damage or destroy the heart valves.
