As a devoted fan and follower of Charity Lawson’s journey, I can’t help but feel deeply moved by her harrowing experiences on Dancing with the Stars last season. It’s heart-wrenching to see such a talented and resilient individual face cyberbullying that was not only racially charged but also far worse than anything she encountered during her previous reality TV stints.

During a recent interview, The Bachelorette #20 Charity Lawson became emotional as she recounted the racially-motivated online harassment she faced during the 32nd season of “Dancing with the Stars” last year, which she described as significantly more intense than any previous reality TV contests she had participated in.

In a candid confession on the Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast last Sunday, I admitted that I had been facing threats of harm for simply living my life authentically. People criticized me for not meeting their expectations, accusing me of arrogance, self-importance, and taking things for granted.

‘It was so damaging, night in, night out.’

Charity confided in host Cheryl Burke that she endured tremendous turmoil related to her mental health whenever she looked at the comments section of DWTS’ official Instagram account. She maintained that these comments weren’t being moderated at the time (although they now seem to be filtered seven months later).

‘Lawson observed that living life as a black woman and appearing on a reality TV show presents unique challenges, as it seems that these experiences are often unprotected or disregarded.’

As a devoted enthusiast, there have been times after rehearsals when I found myself muttering, “Oh, I secretly pray that I trip up and am eliminated.” It’s a rather dismal state I find myself in.

In spite of this, Georgia-born dancer Artem Chigvintsev managed to make it through all 11 episodes and ended up in fourth position, while Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy were victorious, taking home the prestigious Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

Charity grumbled, saying, ‘I structured my video segments so they seemed like I was showing off and boasting about my scores, but honestly, I’m just discussing them because you all inquired.’

Experiencing those packages being painted like that was incredibly annoying. It gives off an impression that I only care about scores and consider myself superior to others, which is far from the truth.

Lawson is now preparing for her wedding with Dotun Olubeko, the successful integrative medicine specialist whom she chose on The Bachelorette’s 20th season. He proposed to her during filming on April 30, 2023.

The individual who graduated from Auburn University has established themselves as a significant influence, securing brand endorsements from companies such as Hismile US, Maybelline New York, Baha Mar Resorts, and Jockey.

Back in the whirlwind of the 27th season on ABC’s The Bachelor, starring none other than Zach Shallcross, I was nothing but an ardent admirer, watching from the sidelines as Charity gracefully claimed her fourth position – a feat that didn’t go unnoticed by this dedicated fan like me!

Fans can catch the 33rd season of Dancing with the Stars on September 17 on ABC.
