Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe how Tom Hardy won over Charlotte Riley! Apparently, it wasn’t some grand gesture or anything, but a really good cup of tea! I mean, seriously? That’s the sweetest, most Tom Hardy thing ever! It just proves he’s perfect, doesn’t it? A decent cuppa and Charlotte was hooked – I totally get it! I’d fall for him over a biscuit, let alone a brew!
The couple first met and fell in love while filming the 2009 television series based on Wuthering Heights, and they’ve been married for 12 years.
While preparing for their passionate roles as Heathcliff and Cathy, Charlotte, 44, shared how a conversation with Tom, 48, about their common Northern backgrounds led to their romantic connection.
The actress remembered that Tom made her a surprisingly good cup of tea – strong, just how she liked it. She thought a proper cup of tea needed to be strong enough to hold a spoon upright, and his met the mark, making a good first impression.
He mentioned his mother was from the North, and I figured that was a good sign. If someone can handle themselves and respond well to challenges, you know you’re going to have a fun experience.
Charlotte also noted how relaxed and fun Tom was to work with, clarifying that unlike what some have said, he doesn’t take his roles too seriously. He was simply being himself – playful and charming.
The actress charmed the man who would become her husband with her playful wit, and she remembered a funny story from when they were filming Wuthering Heights.
We were discussing it recently, and she shared a beautiful quote with The Sunday Times Style Magazine: “Whatever our souls are made of, yours and mine are the same.”
We filmed the scene in a small, picturesque church out in the countryside, and it was stunning. I was sitting in a pew and had to deliver my line to Tom, but he burst out laughing – he couldn’t keep it together!
Apparently, when I say a certain phrase with my northern accent, it comes out sounding like a rather rude expression. It was so funny, we spent the rest of the day laughing about it. I’m actually considering getting it tattooed on me!
The couple got married in 2014 and now have two children: a 10-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter. The actor also has a 17-year-old son, Louis, from a previous relationship with Rachael Speed.
The adaptation of Wuthering Heights caused quite a stir because of the obvious and intense connection between stars Tom and Charlotte while they were filming.
Director Coky Giedroyc recently revealed that she frequently had to pause filming because of the strong romantic connection between actors Tom and Charlotte.
She described the on-set chemistry with her co-star to The Sunday Times Culture Magazine as incredibly strong, saying it became so intense she frequently had to call for a break in filming.
Charlotte’s next role is in ‘Babies,’ a new six-part BBC drama. The series explores the emotional journeys of two couples as they experience pregnancy, loss, and the challenges of finding love, and will premiere on March 30th.
Tom meanwhile is currently shooting the second season of Guy Ritchie’s hit series Mobland.
