Sally Wainwright’s period drama cancelled after one season

As a long-time fan of Sally Wainwright’s work and someone who has been captivated by her unique storytelling for years, I must admit that I was thrilled when I heard about “Renegade Nell.” Having grown up on classic period dramas like “Pride and Prejudice” and “Jane Eyre,” I was intrigued by the concept of a modern twist on the genre with a supernatural element.

Sally Wainwright’s period drama Renegade Nell has been cancelled after one season.

In late March, the new production penned by the “Happy Valley” scribe premiered on Disney+. The talented ensemble features Louisa Harland from “Derry Girls” and Nick Mohammed known for his role in “Ted Lasso.”

“Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor have crafted a remarkable world that makes us extremely proud at Disney,” the company stated further.

We’re grateful to our production partners at Lookout Point, the whole talented cast, especially Louisa Harland, and the dedicated crew for their exceptional work on this series. We look forward to potential collaborations with them once more in the future.

1. “Rebel Nell” pursued the tale of Nell Jackson (Harland), a young widow who had transformed into a highwayman thief, as she made her way back from the battlefields of war-ravaged Europe. Upon her arrival home, she was falsely accused of murder.

1. As a devoted fan, I often find myself cheering for Nell during her thrilling escapades, fueled by her intermittently bestowed supernatural abilities and the enigmatic magic of her ally, Mohammed, the spectral figure known as Billy Bland.

Renegade Nell holds an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating of 87%, landing favourably with critics.

In her 4-star review for Digital Spy, Rebecca Cook notes that the intricately planned combat scenes in “Renegade Nell” are particularly enjoyable and can be hard to resist.

Nell’s daring actions, avoiding bullets and intimidating a band of highwaymen, are accompanied by an engaging choral soundtrack. In one instant, this music evokes the spirit of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” while in another, it brings to mind the intensity of “Gladiator.” This production, a collaboration between Disney and Wainwright, is expertly brought to life under the guidance of Ben Taylor, known for his work on “Sex Education,” ensuring an exceptional level of quality.

1. The secondary actors in this production are Joely Richardson portraying Lady Eularia Moggerhanger, Adrian Lester from Trigger Point playing Robert Hennessey, and Craig Parkinson known for his role in Line of Duty taking on the character Sam Trotter.

Renegade Nell season one is available to stream on Disney+.
