Rachel Stevens reveals S Club had group therapy after the 'devastating' death of bandmate Paul Cattermole and explains how it 'brought them closer together'

As a long-time fan of S Club 7, I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Cattermole. Having grown up watching their shows and listening to their music, they were a big part of my childhood. The news of Paul’s death brought back memories of happy times and made me reflect on how much he contributed to the group’s success.

Last year, Rachel Stevens shared that S Club underwent therapy as a group to better deal with the tragic passing of their bandmate, Paul Cattermole.

2023 marks the tragic loss of my beloved artist, discovered deceased at his Dorset residence, aged 46 in April. Regrettably, he passed away due to complications related to heart problems, and there were no indications of any untoward circumstances surrounding this unfortunate and sudden demise.

Two months before the announcement of their reunion tour, S Club 7 experienced a sad loss as a member passed away.

In an episode of the Happy Place podcast, Rachel, aged 46, shared that the band underwent therapy sessions as a group. During these sessions, they opened up discussions and exchanged recollections about Paul.

Opening up about the sessions, she told host Fearne Cotton: ‘It was really good. I think talking is just the best thing ever and it can never be a bad thing.

1. ‘It encourages discussions and offers assistance; it truly couldn’t be more straightforward. It was an exceptionally moving method to honor his life, yet it was heartbreakingly sad.’

Rachel asserted that the tour would definitely not go on, yet shared how the experience had strengthened her bond with bandmates Tina Barrett (47), Jon Lee (42), Bradley McIntosh (42), and Jo O’Meara (45).

I was utterly captivated by the experience. It drew my partner and me even nearer, despite the pain it caused. We endured it side by side, drawing strength from our shared connection.

Instead of “Obviously the tour was all happening, there was no talk about it not happening but we just stopped and took a step back. We talked and we were there for each other and that’s all you can do,” you could say:

1. After that, the reunion tour served as a celebration for Paul, and they renamed it “The Good Times Tour” in honor of his song “Good Times” from their third album.

1. “Rachel mentioned that they aimed to keep his family in mind and show respect. They were constantly communicating, reminiscing about him.”

1. “The tour transformed into something much more profound, serving as a heartfelt tribute and joyful commemoration of him.”

In simple terms,

Yesterday, on the 6th of April, 2023, Paul was discovered deceased at his residence in Dorset. His passing was confirmed in the evening.

The cause of Dorset Police’s recent announcement regarding Paul’s death remains a mystery. However, they have assured us that there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Paul was well-loved by his family, friends, and fans in the S Club group. At this difficult time, I urge everyone to respect their privacy as they grieve and process this tragic loss.

1. On social media, they too expressed their grief, posting an old black-and-white photo of Paul with the caption: “We are deeply saddened by his departure.”

I can’t express in words the profound sorrow and grief that fills us all. We were truly blessed to have had him with us, and the cherished memories we hold will always be a source of gratitude. His absence will be felt deeply by each one of us.

1. After Paul’s passing, the collective changed their name to S Club. Notably, Hannah, who used to be Paul’s girlfriend, left the group in May, stating that the timing wasn’t suitable for her to join them on tour.

Last year in October, The Good Times Tour began with a series of acknowledgments to Paul. These tributes took the form of previously recorded clips of him performing, which were shown on screens.

I have been through some tough times myself, losing a loved one is an experience that leaves a deep scar. So when I read Rachel’s words about touring with her group feeling “cathartic” after Paul’s passing, I could relate. It’s not an easy path, but finding solace in the things we love and the people who support us can make all the difference during the grieving process. Music has a healing power, and it seems that for Rachel, being on stage with her band is helping her cope and find peace in the midst of sadness.

“We frequently honor him, making our reunions even more meaningful.”

Paul’s eagerness for this tour has grown into something truly special and dedication, becoming both a commemoration and a jubilant recognition of him.

‘It has been very emotional, but it’s a very cathartic way of sharing him and his memories.’
