Rob Lowe details why it was a 'nightmare' working alongside son John Owen in Netflix series Unstable

As a lifestyle expert with extensive experience in entertainment and family dynamics, I find Rob Lowe’s candidness about his experience working with his son John Owen on their Netflix series Unstable both amusing and heartwarming. It is not uncommon for parents to have high expectations for their children, especially when they attend prestigious institutions like Stanford University. However, it seems that Rob had a more academic-focused vision for his son’s future, envisioning him as a scientist rather than an actor.

Rob Lowe playfully expressed that collaborating with his son John Owen on the Netflix show “Unstable” was challenging for him, as he believed his kid was more focused on finding a cure for cancer instead of pursuing acting.

On The View last week, the 60-year-old actor humorously remarked that his son might have been suited for a job at Jamba Juice, rather than attending Stanford University to pursue science and technology studies.

As a lifestyle expert, I often reflect on the power of shared experiences and the bond they create. In the case of Rob, whose television series ‘Unstable’ serves as a testament to his journey alongside his son towards sobriety, I find myself curious about his aspirations during his early days in the industry. So, Rob, having been immersed in this world since you were just 12 years old, I can’t help but wonder: Was it a long-held dream of yours to share the limelight with your son in such a profound and personal way?

Rob quickly retorted, “No way, that was no dream! It was a terrible nightmare, John. Let me explain, I paid for this boy’s college tuition at Stanford, I even wrote the check. If he wanted to pursue acting, he could have worked part-time at Jamba Juice instead!” With an uneasy grin, John Owen looked on.

Instead, Rob went on to remark with amusement: “I had expected him to find a cure for cancer or work in a lab, but all he did was save me some money! The audience chuckled at my surprise.”

1. After asking John Owen about his field of study (which he mentioned was science and technology), Ana replied affirmatively to Rob by saying, “Alright, I see your point!”

Sara Haines playfully remarked, “That’s what having a Stanford degree gets you!” In response, John Owen explained, “Exactly, which is one reason why our show takes place in a biotech lab. So, in a way, it did prove beneficial.”

Sara retorted with a witty comeback: “At least you put on that act on television, right?” To which John Owen responded succinctly: “That’s correct.”

In the interview, the 28-year-old discussed the motivation behind their TV show Unstable, which premieres its second season on Netflix on August 1. They shared: “My brother takes my teasing well, which is a unique expression of affection in our Lowe family.”

At some point, I was joking about someone on social networks, and it seemed to amuse others. Then, I approached him and asked, “May I poke fun at him on live national TV?”, to which he agreed.

In his explanation of how the series provides a therapeutic experience, John Owen added, “It feels relieving at times as I can act out my own past experiences on screen. The difference is that in real life, these experiences often lack resolution. However, in the show, there’s always a satisfying conclusion. This cathartic and healing process brings me great comfort.”

He remarked that the program was extremely lifelike for him, as his father frequently criticized him based on aspects like his posture.

1. His remarks were made a few days following the revelation that they, along with Rob, have strengthened their bond through their shared journey of sobriety while collaborating on Unstable, which they mentioned recently.

In an interview with Extra, John Owen shared that it had been more than seven years since his last relapse, and he mentioned that maintaining sobriety was a significant bonding experience between him and his father.

1. “John Owen highly commended Rob, acknowledging him as an exemplar during challenging times. He mentioned that seeing someone triumph after facing adversity provided great encouragement.”

1. The actor added that his father wisely refrained from excessively correcting his actions, instead letting him learn from his errors within set limits, thus ensuring his safety.

When Extra inquired about his advice for other parents regarding giving children freedom, Rob explained that it’s essential to establish limits to prevent them from engaging in risky or extremely foolish behaviors.

He asserted that there were limits, but expressing a skeptical view, he added, “It’s unlikely that anyone will quit drinking or using drugs just because you ask them to, or due to an arrest, or job loss, or breakup.”

Rob insisted that the only way for someone to stay sober was making the decision on ‘their own.’

Earlier, John Owen shared that he had multiple stays at the hospital due to his struggle with addiction. Tragically, he also lost a dear friend to an overdose involving Fentanyl.

Meanwhile, Rob entered rehab in 1990, at 25, and has been sober since.
