'The Mandalorian & Grogu' to be filmed for IMAX

As a dedicated Star Wars fan who has grown up with this iconic franchise, I can’t contain my excitement about The Mandalorian and Grogu (also known as Baby Yoda) making its way to IMAX theaters in 2026! This marks an important return of Star Wars to the big screen since 2019.

The Mandalorian & Grogu marks Star Wars return to the big screen for the first time since 2019, and it could be headed to an IMAX theater near you!

Based on IMAX’s July 2024 Investor Presentation, Disney has several films scheduled for an IMAX release in 2026, including “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” “Toy Story 5,” “Avatar – The Seed Bearer,” and “MOANA.” Notably, among these films, only “The Mandalorian & Grogu” was filmed using IMAX cameras, as signified by the IMAX camera logo under the movie title.

IMAX is a cinematography method that creates images around ten times larger than those from regular 35mm films, as explained by “In Depth Cine.” This results in a more superior image quality.

The larger the surface area of a piece of film, the more photographic information it will contain. This means that an Imax image resolves much more detail and has very little visible film grain. Basically, Imax footage will look significantly cleaner and higher quality.

As a seasoned film critic with years of experience under my belt, I have had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of cinematic technology firsthand. And let me tell you, there is a notable distinction between “filmed for IMAX” and “shot with IMAX.”

In addition to specific action scenes in “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi,” none of the Star Wars films have been shot entirely for IMAX. Jon Favreau attempted to explore aspect ratios in “The Mandalorian” Season 2 episode “Chapter 9: The Marshall.” This change may seem minor, but it greatly enhanced the visual experience, leaving fans excited about the improved appearance when the episode was released.

Although Star Wars has significantly transformed the movie industry, none of its films have been shot entirely using IMAX technology, which is fitting given its cinematic influence. The Mandalorian and Grogu series, helmed by Favreau, might be the one to venture into new territories in this aspect. This production has already made waves in television with Stagecraft or “The Volume,” an innovative approach that brings realistic virtual settings for actors to film in, enhancing their performances compared to traditional green or blue screens.

Fans will be rewarded for waiting three years between seasons of “The Mandalorian” with the IMAX release of “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” featuring Star Wars back in theaters. Witnessing Star Wars in IMAX is the ideal method to fully appreciate its grandeur, making it a must-experience for every dedicated fan.

The Mandalorian & Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
