A live-action Star Trek comedy is in development which is making fans ask about Star Trek: Legacy
As a longtime Star Trek fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment at the latest development in the Star Trek Universe. I was utterly surprised when I heard about the announcement of a live-action comedy series during San Diego Comic Con’s Star Trek Universe panel (via Trekmovie). Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for trying new things and exploring different genres within the Star Trek franchise, but it feels like we’re being pulled in yet another direction.
At San Diego Comic Con’s Star Trek Universe panel, an unexpected announcement was made through Trekmovie. A live-action comedy series based on Star Trek is being developed. This news took fans by surprise and wasn’t previously anticipated. Tawny Newsome from Star Trek: Lower Decks and Justin Simien of Dear White People are the creators behind this project, which Alex Kurtzman has dubbed “Star Trek’s first live-action comedy.” While some Trek fans are thrilled about the new direction, others question why this comedy is being produced instead of focusing on continuing the Legacy series.
On X, Paramount Plus announced via their @startrekonPPplus account that a new comedy is in the works. This announcement sparked various responses from fans. Some are excited for another comedic series, while others express apprehension. However, there’s a group of fans more focused on the potential overshadowing of Star Trek: Legacy in Paramount Plus’ lineup.
It’s no surprise that Star Trek: Picard’s third season has been successful and set the stage for a potential spin-off, Legacy. Fans are eagerly anticipating this new series, but so far, there’s been little progress despite assurances from Kurtzman that fan feedback is being considered. It’s natural for some fans to feel disappointed that resources seem to be directed towards another comedy series instead.
There’s no explanation as to why this comedy series was preferred over Legacy. Production costs might have been a deciding factor, considering the former could be produced at a lower cost than the latter. The plotline of the series bears some resemblance to current trending reality shows.
Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.
Regardless of the situation, the new show might face a challenge in attracting fans expecting an exciting series featuring familiar faces and cherished characters.
