Formula 1: Quiet development could speed up Red Bull driver change

As a dedicated Formula 1 fan with years of experience following the sport, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns in the world of racing. And let me tell you, the current state of the constructor championship is nothing short of thrilling.

Following their strong second place finish at the Hungaroring in the Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend, McLaren has emerged as the leading contenders to claim the title of the 2024 Formula 1 constructors champion according to FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook. Redbull, who have held the championship for the past two years, currently trail behind.

For the first time since the beginning of the 2022 racing season, when Charles Leclerc and Ferrari showed exceptional performance, another team apart from Red Bull has emerged as strong contenders for the championship title.

I’ve noticed an intriguing difference in the odds for McLaren and Red Bull at two popular sportsbooks, FanDuel and DraftKings. At FanDuel, McLaren is a strong favorite with odds of -130 ($130 bet to win $100), while Red Bull is underdog with odds of +110 ($100 bet to win $110). However, the situation reverses at DraftKings, where McLaren is priced higher at -150 ($150 bet to win $100) and Red Bull is a more attractive underdog with odds of +110.

Since Lando Norris secured his first win at the Miami Grand Prix, it’s been clear that McLaren has possessed the fastest car on the racetrack. Despite expectations that Red Bull’s RB20 would surpass the dominant performance of last year’s RB19, which Max Verstappen claimed victory in 19 out of 22 races, McLaren has continued to set the pace.

Over the past seven Formula 1 races in South Florida, Verstappen has earned the most points with a total of 126. However, the McLaren teammates Norris and Piastri are not far behind. Piastri even outscores Norris (108 points vs 106 points), which is largely due to his victory in Hungary.

Sergio Perez of Red Bull started the season strong, earning five top-5 finishes and four podium positions in a row. However, since then, his best result has been a seventh place, and he’s managed to score just 21 points.

McLaren has fallen behind Red Bull by only 51 points in the Formula 1 constructor standings due to their lack of production in recent races. The team based in Woking, who have not claimed the title since 1998, have surpassed Red Bull’s points tally in six out of the last seven race weekends. Their greatest advantage was a season-best 27 points last Sunday.

Sergio Perez out at Red Bull?

As a dedicated gamer following Formula One closely, I’ve noticed an intriguing rumor circulating in the community. Despite the 34-year-old Mexican driver securing a two-year contract extension with the Milton Keynes-based team, extending his tenure through the 2026 season, there’s been buzz that he might be let go during the upcoming summer break.

As a gamer, I was facing a tough situation before the Hungarian Grand Prix. With only two races left to secure my spot, a crash during qualifying at the Hungaroring didn’t make things easier. Finishing seventh place in Hungary, which was tied for my best result in the last 2.5 months, wasn’t exactly the victory I needed.

Helmut Marko and Christian Horner don’t rely on FanDuel and DraftKings betting odds to make their decisions.

Based on my years of following Formula One racing, I’ve come to realize that the drastic shift in odds between Red Bull and McLaren is a cause for concern. Having witnessed the ebb and flow of team dynamics over the years, I can’t help but notice the starkly different paths these two teams seem to be treading. Red Bull, with their consistent dominance, has long been the frontrunner. But McLaren, under new management and with a renewed sense of purpose, has shown impressive growth since the Miami Grand Prix.

Despite Red Bull no longer having the fastest car during the last seven races, Verstappen has successfully increased his championship lead. In the past three races alone, he has maintained a third place standing in points, surpassing his closest championship competitor Norris. Even with incidents occurring in two out of the previous three events, Verstappen’s consistent performance keeps him in a strong position.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my disappointment with Perez’s performance in the last seven races. With just 21 points under his belt, it’s hard to accept such a lackluster result. The nearest competitors from Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren during this period are Leclerc with an impressive 64 points and even a race win to boast about. In contrast, Perez is only barely ahead of Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll from Aston Martin.

The last race before the four-week summer hiatus is the Belgian Grand Prix, happening at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps this coming Sunday, July 28. ESPN will broadcast live starting 8:55 a.m. ET. Consider signing up for a free trial of FuboTV to catch the action!
