SDCC 2024: Avengers 5 now Avengers Doomsday, with RDJ as Doom
As a longtime Marvel fan and avid gamer of the various Marvel video games, I have to admit I was both surprised and excited by Marvel Studios’ announcement of “Avengers: Doomsday” at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. After the initial reveal of “The Kang Dynasty” two years ago, I had been eagerly anticipating the return of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. However, the recent events leading to his departure from the project left many of us in limbo.
Two years have passed since Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiled “Avengers 5” or “The Kang Dynasty” at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con. Fast forward to Comic-Con 2024, I was thrilled as Kevin took the Hall H stage and shared exciting news about this highly anticipated project. However, it wasn’t quite what we had imagined. The new title? “Avengers: Doomsday.”
After months of anticipation, it’s now clear that Marvel won’t follow through with its initial plans to make Kang, previously introduced in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Loki” season 2, the primary antagonist in its upcoming major Avengers film. This decision comes after Marvel Studios severed ties with Kang actor Jonathan Majors following his conviction on assault and harassment charges last December. Although recasting and adhering to the original scheme or pivoting to a new direction were potential options, Marvel ultimately chose the latter path that would still guide the expansive franchise towards the next Avengers film, “Secret Wars.”
As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can hardly contain my excitement about the latest announcements from The Avengers team! The Russo Brothers returning to direct the next two movies is already huge news for us fans. But wait, there’s more!
As a gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of “The Kang Dynasty” for what feels like ages, with a scheduled release date set two years ago. Yet, despite the excitement building up around the Marvel community, there was no formal announcement regarding who would be directing this highly-anticipated film.
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
