Long-awaited Uzumaki anime premiering this September, watch the twisted first teaser

As a long-time fan of Junji Ito’s chilling and masterfully crafted manga series, Uzumaki, I have eagerly anticipated this anime adaptation for years. The recent debut of the official teaser at SDCC was an exhilarating moment for me, as it offered a tantalizing glimpse into what promises to be a visually stunning representation of Ito’s haunting world.

For years, fans have eagerly waited for the anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s renowned and chilling horror manga “Uzumaki.” At Comic-Con in San Diego, Adult Swim unveiled a sneak peek of the upcoming series, set to air on September 22 in the United States.

Back in 2019, I excitedly learned about this upcoming anime. The release was predicted to occur around 2023. However, the launch date kept getting postponed due to the intricate development process taking longer than anticipated. Based on the enticing teaser above, it appears that every extra minute spent in production has been worth it. The series now unfolds before me as a stunning adaptation of Ito’s masterful creations.

In the quaint Japanese town of Kurouzu-cho, I found myself engrossed in the chilling tale of Uzumaki. As a teenage boy named Kirie Goshima, I was drawn into an unsettling supernatural occurrence that caused everything around me to spiral out of control. This hamlet is known for its unnerving visuals and gruesome body horror. The teaser offered a glimpse into the terrors ahead, displaying snippets of the bizarre phenomenon. For instance, I saw someone desperately trying to remove spirals from their fingertips or people’s bodies contorting in grotesque ways, with their hair, eyes, and tongues twisting in unnatural shapes.

Here’s the official anime description shared by Adult Swim:

Shuichi Saito, an old classmate of high school student Kirie Goshima, who was born and raised in Kurouzu-cho, proposes they leave town together. The town is being affected by a bizarre phenomenon – the wind whirls, smoke from the crematorium twists into spirals, and the residents’ eyes spin, their tongues curl, and bodies contort unnaturally. In an effort to escape the curse of these spirals, Kirie contemplates fleeing Kurouzu-cho. But can she successfully break free from this chaos?

The network previously revealed the Japanese and English voice actors, which are as follows:

  • Kirie Goshima – Uki Satake / Abby Trott
  • Shuichi Saito – Shin-ichiro Miki / Robbie Daymond
  • Azami Kurotani – Mariya Ise / Cristina Vee
  • Kirie’s Dad – Toshio Furukawa / Doug Stone
  • Shuichi’s Dad – Takashi Matsuyama / Aaron LaPlante
  • Shuichi’s Mom – Mika Doi / Mona Marshall
  • Katayama – Katsutoshi Matsuzaki / Max Mittleman

As a curious gamer, I’d recommend checking out last year’s first-look video that Adult Swim shared, to help me understand what the upcoming show might be like.

In the video, Shuichi is shown asking Kirie if she would like to depart with him in this part of the narrative, as he grows uneasy. He recalls his father’s eyes spinning erratically within their sockets and his escalating fixation on spirals, causing him great distress when the spiral-shaped fishcakes were absent from the miso soup. Essentially, Shuichi can’t find peace unless there are spirals around.

The creative team behind this show has outdone themselves, bringing the manga to life on screen with an exceptional attention to detail. I’m more than willing to endure the lengthy production process if it means we’ll be treated to a truly remarkable final product.

On Sundays at 12:30 a.m., starting September 22, Adult Swim’s Toonami block will debut the anime series Uzumaki. The English-dubbed episodes will then be shown every Thursday and can be streamed on Max following their television broadcast.
