As a fan of Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King, I find their long-standing friendship to be nothing short of inspiring. For over four decades, these two incredible women have shared a bond that has stood the test of time and weathered countless rumors. Their platonic relationship is a testament to the power of true friendship and the importance of authenticity in our lives.
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have been close friends for over 30 years, and their relationship is strictly platonic.
Longtime friends and TV hosts, King and his colleague, have once again addressed the old rumors about their romantic relationship during an interview with Melinda French Gates for her “Moments That Make Us” series. King clarified any confusion by stating directly: “If we were a couple, we would have shared that with you by now.”
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Oprah Winfrey, 70, and Gayle King, 69, for several decades now. We first crossed paths in the late ’70s while working together at a news station in Baltimore. Ever since then, we’ve become an unbreakable team on-screen, gracing red carpets side by side and embarking on countless girls’ trips. These shared experiences have led some to speculate that our bond runs deeper than friendship, but to me, it’s just a testament to the strong connection we’ve built over the years.
During the early 2000s, both Winfrey and King dismissed the gossip publicly. In an interview with “Good Morning America” in 2007, King expressed her surprise at the magnitude of the rumors and shared that they troubled her.
“At that moment, she expressed, ‘If we had something to tell you, we would.’ But we genuinely believe there’s nothing amiss, making the situation even more aggravating.”
In 2010, Winfrey clarified to Barbara Walters of “20/20” that she is not gay.
“I find the rumor annoying for two reasons: first, it implies that someone believes I’m being dishonest; second, I don’t live my life by hiding things.”
In my perspective as a moviegoer, some of the TV personalities’ past statements resurfaced during their chat with Gates. Oprah Winfrey expressed that she believed audiences aren’t used to women displaying such raw emotional honesty. She further shared that her bond with Gayle King has endured because Gayle is more elated by my achievements than I am myself.
The pair shared with Gates how their friendship has brought positive changes to both their careers and personal lives. Winfrey emphasized that if King hadn’t divorced William Bumpus in 1993, after being married for eleven years and having two children together, her life would have taken a different course.
“Gayle serves as the maternal figure, friend I’ve always missed in my life,” Winfrey expressed, further stating, “Her bond with me is as strong and crucial as that of a mother or sister.”
