When the creators of Star Trek: Voyager took a risk with a female captain, little did they know that this unique character would go on to inspire generations.

When Star Trek: Voyager’s creators selected Kate Mulgrew to play Captain Kathryn Janeway, they couldn’t anticipate her enduring impact or influence on viewers. Initially, a female captain represented a gamble; however, it paved the way for countless women to pursue careers in science and space exploration. To this day, Captain Janeway is regarded as an exceptional and distinctive Star Trek captain, having helmed a spaceship unlike any other. Moreover, she holds a remarkable distinction: being the first Star Trek character to be cos-played in outer space.

In 2015, Italian astronaut Samantha Crisoforetti, then on the International Space Station, eagerly anticipated a cup of coffee. She shared her excitement with her Twitter audience by posting a photo of herself dressed as Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager, alongside the iconic quote from the show’s sixth episode of the first season, “The Cloud,” where Janeway exclaimed, “There’s coffee in that nebula!”,” after realizing her daily coffee allowance was running low. Delighted by this discovery, she learned that a nearby nebula exhibited omicron particles capable of replenishing their energy supplies, granting them an endless supply of coffee. Consequently, she steered the ship towards the nebula, repeating Janeway’s optimistic words.

Based on WhatCulture’s report, Cristoforetti mentioned the Dragon spacecraft attached to the station, holding the ISSpresso – the pioneering espresso machine in space. Her post gained widespread appreciation from Star Trek enthusiasts, resulting in over 11,000 likes.

Captain Janeway’s influence on Cristoforetti’s choice to embark on a space voyage is uncertain, but there’s no denying that the character has left a significant mark on those aspiring for space exploration. Few fictional figures possess such an impact in reality.
