Deadpool & Wolverine original title changed after fans “f**king hated” it
As a hardcore gamer and avid movie fan, I’ve been following the development of the Deadpool & Wolverine film with bated breath. And let me tell you, the recent revelation that the original title was “Deadpool & Friend” and was changed due to fan backlash has me shaking my head in disbelief.
Ryan Reynolds shared that fans’ disapproval of the initial title for “Deadpool and Wolverine” movie prompted a name change.
On July 24, the actor who portrays Wade Wilson, the anti-hero character, in the third installment of the series, appeared as a guest host on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” together with his “Wolverine” co-star, Hugh Jackman.
In the beginning of the film, Reynolds, who was not only the star but also the co-writer and producer, shared that the initial title for the project was supposed to be “Deadpool and Companion” instead.
Despite the title being revealed prematurely by some online critics before the official trailer drop, it was met with strong disapproval from the audience.
Reynolds shared, “The trailer and our feelings towards it didn’t align well anymore, making ‘that’ an ideal name for our initial project presentations.”
Shawn Levy, our exceptional director and close friend, and I had spent countless hours in the edit room. We felt strongly about changing the title of our project, so we reached out to Disney and Marvel. However, they responded that it was too late as the launch was imminent.
I’m thrilled to share that after some more convincing efforts on my part, Disney finally gave in and approved the name change for the film. The official Deadpool and Wolverine trailer was unveiled the very next day during Super Bowl Sunday.
In seven years following Jackman’s supposed retirement from the X-Men role in “Logan” (released in 2017), Deadpool and Wolverine find him returning to portray the character once again.
The actor from “The Greatest Showman” confessed that it was frightening for him at first to consider putting on the Wolverine costume once more. He took pride in how “Logan” concluded.
Three days after making my retirement announcement for Wolverine public, I found myself at the movies watching Deadpool. I was taken aback and felt a pang of guilt, realizing the error of my earlier decision.
“I’ve never had more fun playing the character.”
