Deadpool & Wolverine’s cameos show a surprising amount of restraint

As a long-time fan of the X-Men universe, I was thrilled to hear that Deadpool and Wolverine were teaming up for a new adventure. And boy, was I in for a treat!

Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers follow.

In the sequel to “Deadpool 2,” unexpected appearances by stars such as Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and James McAvoy left fans guessing. With Reynolds having access to the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, anything was possible when it came to teaming up “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.”

Discovering early returns, such as Aaron Stanford reprising his role as Pyro from the initial X-Men trilogy, were like appetizers hinting at a rich tapestry of cameos. Yet, in hindsight, they might have been warning signs instead.

If you were worried about the film being filled with short appearances from different celebrities solely for the purpose of reminding you “Hey, haven’t we seen this person before?”, the movie surprisingly avoids this.

Although Deadpool and Wolverine feature several notable appearances and unexpected twists for Marvel enthusiasts, the film demonstrates commendable self-control in deciding which characters to introduce and the reasoning behind their inclusion.

As a dedicated gamer and someone who values the thrill of discovery, I strongly advise against peeking at the spoilers that lie ahead. Trust me, the experience of being surprised is an essential part of both gaming and going to the cinema. So, if you’re looking for an unspoiled adventure, now is the time to look away.

Deadpool & Wolverine's cameos show a surprising amount of restraint

In a brilliant and humorous beginning, Deadpool slaughters several TVA agents using Logan’s remains. Later, he pays a visit to Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) to petition for Avengers membership. Predictably, Happy denies Deadpool’s plea, but unexpectedly, this is the sole significant MCU appearance until late in the story when Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) makes a brief cameo.

In a revised version of “Thor: The Dark World,” Chris Hemsworth’s character Thor appears, grieving over the demise of Deadpool. A fleeting glimpse of Hulk is included in an early montage, but it’s so brief that it hardly warrants attention.

At first, you might assume there will be more Marvel Cinematic Universe cameos, particularly when Chris Evans appears in the Void. When Deadpool encounters him for the first time, he believes this is a meeting with Captain America and anticipates him uttering the famous “Avengers assemble” call to action.

In an unexpected and amusing twist, Evans announces “flame on!” instead of revealing a new project. However, this is actually a reference to his past role as Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, in the two “Fantastic Four” films released in 2005 and 2007.

Deadpool & Wolverine's cameos show a surprising amount of restraint

In the scene that follows, several cameos of different X-Men appear, some of which were previously revealed through set photo leaks. Among them, only Tyler Mane returns to portray Sabretooth. The roles of other characters like Toad, Juggernaut, and Lady Deathstrike have been recast likely due to the fact that these characters don’t have significant roles or moments in the film.

If fans are disappointed by the movie, it quickly makes up for it with an astonishing revelation that leaves a lasting impression.

Following their getaway from Cassandra Nova, Deadpool and Wolverine are rescued by Laura, also known as X-23, portrayed by Dafne Keen. It’s revealed in the final trailer that she is part of a team with Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Blade (Wesley Snipes), and Gambit (Channing Tatum).

There were reports that Garner would take on her character from “Daredevil” once more and star in a standalone film for her, but these developments came as a shock – given that Tatum hasn’t portrayed the role of Gambit in any previous productions. (Apologies to Taylor Kitsch for any confusion.)

Instead of simple appearances for the sake of entertainment, these characters are integral to Deadpool’s narrative. He convinces them to join him in his battle, providing each of them with an ending to their individual stories. Similar to the bonus scenes that follow the end credits, these cameos serve as a nod to Marvel Comics’ rich history before the Marvel Cinematic Universe took off.

Deadpool & Wolverine's cameos show a surprising amount of restraint

The universe, which once thrived, has now come to a halt with the disappointing box office performances of “Dark Phoenix” and “The New Mutants.” However, the arrival of “Deadpool & Wolverine” ensures that this universe concludes on a new note.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a pang of uncertainty as the final credits roll in. Could this be it? The end of an epic adventure with my favorite heroes, Deadpool and Wolverine? But where are the others? I scour every corner of the screen, rewinding the tape to check for any missed details. Alas, they seem to have vanished without a trace. For now, all we can do is hold our breath and wait for potential sequels or spin-offs that might bring them back into the fold.

In simpler terms, although Blade wasn’t part of the Fox Marvel universe that is now part of the MCU, it played a crucial role in paving the way for successful Marvel movies. It was the first film to demonstrate the potential of this genre, making it essential to acknowledge Blade’s importance when honoring the X-Men universe.

Some X-Men fans might feel let down if the film doesn’t include more well-known characters like Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen). Contrary to widespread rumors, these famous figures don’t make an appearance in the movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine's cameos show a surprising amount of restraint

As a fan, I’d put it this way: It’s typical of the Deadpool films to poke fun at not being part of the main X-Men storyline. But joining the Marvel Cinatic Universe opens up the possibility for bigger names. Yet, sticking with a nod to an obscure X-Men movie that never existed feels more in line with Deadpool’s irreverent spirit.

Deadpool and Wolverine aren’t above making brief appearances of other characters for no particular reason. For instance, Henry Cavill unexpectedly shows up as a version of Wolverine called Cavillwolverine.

Despite this, the film impressively holds back on unexpected cameos, with all Wolverine appearances being portrayed by Hugh Jackman. No Daniel Radcliffe or other easy options were chosen.

I’ve been a huge fan of the dynamic duo, Deadpool and Wolverine. And while their presence in the story is always larger than life, the way they made appearances in certain scenes was unexpectedly refreshing. Instead of following the usual pattern, the writers added some delightful twists to their cameos, keeping me on my toes and making each viewing experience unique.
