Prince Harry opens up about tabloid fight, says it contributed to royal family rift
As a seasoned movie reviewer with a deep appreciation for biographical films that delve into the complexities of public figures’ lives, I was captivated by the ITV1 documentary “Tabloids on Trial,” featuring Prince Harry in his first in-depth interview since his legal victory against Mirror Group Newspapers.
In his own words, Prince Harry admits that his confrontations with the British press played a role in the strain between him and the royal clan.
Prince Charles’ second son, fifth in line for the throne, is well-known for suing Mirror Group Newspapers over a lengthy phone-hacking scandal. For years, he waged this battle in the courts. The prince, who publicly criticized his family members in his 2023 memoir, Oprah Winfrey interview, and Netflix series, admitted that these drawn-out legal fights strained his relationships within the royal family.
In the ITV1 documentary “Tabloids on Trial,” the 39-year-old Duke of Sussex, Harry, acknowledged, “Yes, that’s a crucial part of it.” This is his first detailed interview following his successful lawsuit against the Daily Mirror publisher towards the end of last year.
As a cinephile, I can relate to the complexities of family dynamics portrayed in many films. However, when it comes to discussing mine personally, I must admit it’s a challenging task. The media scrutiny surrounding my family and I is intense, and any comment I make is often met with harsh criticism. After formally stepping back from royal duties in 2020 and moving my loved ones to California, I have made it clear that this was necessary. Ideally, we would do this as a united front. From a service perspective and considering the public role we hold, these are the sacrifices we must make for the greater good. But, you know, I’m making these decisions based on my reasons.
In December, a U.K. court ordered Mirror Group Newspapers to pay Harry £130,000 (approximately $180,000) as part of a lawsuit he had filed. The two parties reached an agreement and paid out in February. MGN then issued an “unreserved” apology for past misdeeds.
Harry, with ongoing lawsuits against The Daily Mail and The Sun publishers, expressed his belief that there’s no one more capable than him to see this process through. He stated his intention was to secure justice for all involved parties. He felt validated by the judge’s supportive decision in December.
“It was a significant win for us when we entered that courtroom and emerged with a favorable verdict from the judge. But what made it even more impressive was the fact that this success extended beyond just the involved individuals. This triumph reached the highest echelons, implicating lawyers and top executives. Therefore, securing this outcome in such a high-stakes trial represents an extraordinary achievement.”
In this one-hour documentary, Harry’s testimony and insights from other notoriously scandalous celebrities such as actor Hugh Grant, singer-actor Charlotte Church, and soccer player Paul Gascoigne are featured. The program “Tabloids on Trial” delves into the questionable methods employed by the British media to illegally gain access to the voicemails of celebrities and public figures, ultimately leading to privacy invasion lawsuits.
In the documentary, the founder of the Invictus Games expressed that it appeared the tabloids, which detailed his personal life and scandals with great care, held information about him before he became aware of it himself. This left him feeling uneasy with sensations of paranoia, fear, worry, and distrust towards those around him.
“He pointed out that there’s a significant gap between what people find intriguing and what truly serves the public good,” the prince explained. Additionally, he spoke of his late mother, Princess Diana, who he believed was subjected to intrusive journalism in the mid-1990s, which tragically ended in her death in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
As a movie critic, I’d rephrase it this way: “Despite the tabloids continuing to portray her as paranoid, she wasn’t. She was in fact spot on about what was happening to her, sadly, she’s no longer here to validate her claims and uncover the truth herself.”
