I, as a passionate fan of Apple TV+ and particularly the intriguing sci-fi series “Severance,” couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming second season of this thought-provoking show. Having only recently discovered it in late 2024, I was both captivated by its unique premise and impressed by its seamless blend of creepy, funny, and suspenseful elements.

I discovered “Severance,” Apple TV+’s intriguing sci-fi series about a team of employees who undergo a process that separates their work and home memories, relatively recently. It was an engaging watch, filled with chilling, humorous, and suspenseful moments. The season finale, which left me on the edge of my seat in 2022, would have left me fuming had I seen it then. Fortunately, I don’t have to wait long to discover what happens next.

Apple TV+’s “Severance” stands out among other excellent shows on the platform, making it an unexpected underdog in the streaming market. Apple’s financial resources and commitment to quality content have resulted in a wealth of engaging programs for subscribers. However, despite these advantages, Apple TV+ lags behind competitors like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max in popularity. Rather than changing course, Apple has the means to continue producing high-caliber shows indefinitely due to its vast financial reserves.

Despite its vast resources, Apple also has financial constraints. According to reports from Bloomberg, the tech giant is aiming to manage expenses more stringently due in part to the significant production costs of shows like “Severance.” Each episode of this upcoming second season reportedly costs $20 million to produce, making it one of television’s priciest productions.

As someone who has been an avid fan of Apple TV+ shows for quite some time now, I must admit that I was taken aback by the high subscription fees when I recently compared it to other streaming platforms. However, upon closer inspection, I’ve come to appreciate that the cost is justified by the unique and captivating content they offer.

Behind the scenes, Bloomberg reports, complications arose during the production of “Severance” in 2023. Writers and actors went on strike, causing delays, and there were reported conflicts between producers Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman. Initially intending to star in the show himself, executive producer Ben Stiller brought in Beau Wilimon to collaborate with him on “Severance,” with the long-term goal of having him oversee season 3. However, a planned movie project between Stiller and Wilimon never materialized, leading Stiller to focus more on “Severance.” Ultimately, Apple compensated Wilimon significantly for his contributions to only a few episodes.

Simply put, the situation behind the scenes at Apple isn’t ideal, and they’re committed to preventing similar chaos in the future. This could potentially result in lower costs for shows like “Severance” and other Apple TV+ productions moving forward. Currently, negotiations for season 3 (and subsequent seasons) of “Severance” are underway, as reported by Bloomberg.

It’s likely that the TV and movie industry has been due for a price adjustment given recent events. Taking into account the challenges posed by COVID-19 and strikes over the past few years, production has been quite unusual. Let’s hope for calmer waters ahead, allowing costs to naturally decrease. Additionally, shorter breaks between new seasons would be appreciated. Regardless, the second season of “Severance” is set to debut on January 17, 2025.
