Marvel quietly cancels major MCU movie; fans conflicted
As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has closely followed the developments of their cinematic universe, I must admit that the recent confirmation from Kevin Feige about the lack of plans for an Eternals sequel has left me feeling a bit disappointed but also understanding the business side of things.
The arrival of “Deadpool and Wolverine” has generated significant buzz for the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to several factors. Notably, it represents an opportunity for the franchise to rebound following a subpar 2023, during which two of its three movies failed to meet box office expectations.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled that Marvel Studios has dropped a new release right in time for San Diego Comic-Con week. This means we’ve seen Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, in front of cameras more than usual. He’s been giving fans tantalizing glimpses into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through numerous interviews. Moreover, during these interactions, he addressed some long-circulating rumors and seems to have confirmed one of them. What an exciting turn of events for us fans!
Kevin Feige confirms there are no plans for Eternals 2 right now
As an avid fan, I can tell you that according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige himself, there’s no sign of Eternals 2 in the near future. In a conversation with Inverse, he clarified that currently, there are no imminent plans for another installment in the Celestials’ saga, which aligns with speculation that has been circulating for quite some time.
In 2021, “Eternals” made its debut in cinemas as part of Marvel’s Phase Four, with its title figures poised to play significant roles in the future. The film, alongside “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” introduced major new origins. However, unlike “Shang-Chi,” which garnered considerable momentum despite a smaller budget and less star power, “Eternals” struggled with average critical reception and modest box office earnings. This setback cast doubt on the continuity of these characters’ stories, which is unfortunate given earlier intentions for a sequel.
According to reports, Feige has confirmed that the production of “Eternals 2” is on hold, possibly even cancelled, following earlier claims this year. Insider Daniel Richtman suggested that this decision may also impact the future of “Ant-Man 4” and “Captain Marvel 3.” Feige had initially shown interest in a sequel, but Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed concerns about potential box office failures after recent Marvel disappointments and the underperformance of the initial “Eternals” film.
Fans are finding themselves in a quandary upon hearing that the film’s sequel won’t be made, as reactions have been divided. While some acknowledge reasons why the production company isn’t moving forward right now, others had eagerly anticipated continuing the journey of these characters, inspired by the hints left in the post-credits scene.
It’s uncertain if there will be a sequel to “The Eternals,” but given the significant roles some characters played in the narrative, it’s possible they may reappear in the next two Avengers films. These movies mark the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga and are expected to leave a lasting impression on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Feige himself has acknowledged this continued influence when speaking with Inverse.
There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.
The head of Marvel Studios is talking about the initial trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World,” where we saw a huge Celestial hand emerging from the water for the first time. This discovery could significantly impact the film and the MCU as a whole, although the specifics are still uncertain. It’s reassuring that Marvel hasn’t overlooked the consequences of “Eternals” and Tiamut’s attempt to destroy Earth.
The characters’ reappearance in the movie remains uncertain, along with the specific timing. However, audiences can look forward to more of the story unfolding in future installments. Regrettably, no sequel has been announced as of now.
Maybe one day.
