Co-producer of Star Trek: Prodigy wants to do a Star Trek: Travelers series
As a long-time Star Trek fan and avid gamer, I have eagerly devoured every new addition to the expansive Star Trek universe. The recent release of Star Trek: Prodigy‘s second season on Netflix has been a welcome treat, with its engaging storyline and the return of fan-favorite character Wesley Crusher, played masterfully by Wil Wheaton.
Twenty episodes from the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy are now available on Netflix. Though we don’t have definitive viewership data, the series has climbed into the top ten rankings in various countries, potentially increasing the chances for a third season. Fans and co-producer Jennifer Muro, who shared this update on Twitter/X on July 12th, are hopeful for a renewal. However, should there be no season three of Prodigy, Muro has proposed another Star Trek concept—Star Trek: Travelers.
I’m really hoping for a third season of Star Trek: Prodigy. But if that’s not an option, I’d love to collaborate with my friend Wil on a new Star Trek series called Star Trek: Travelers. This would give me the chance to explore the Star Trek universe and fulfill my dreams of being involved in Doctor Who-inspired stories. With Wil’s exceptional acting skills, we could create endless compelling narratives for this potential show. #StarTrekProdigy #StarTrekTravelers #SpoilersFromProdigy

Muro draws inspiration from the well-received comeback of Wil Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: Voyager’s second season. During this period, Wesley significantly contributed to guiding Admiral Janeway’s new recruits through the intricacies of the timeline. The fan reaction towards the character has been overwhelmingly favorable. In an interview with Trekmovie, Wheaton expressed his delight in reprising his role, referring to it as a “privilege” for him to be involved in the story once more.
And wow, am I thrilled to see fans celebrating Wesley Crusher, not just happy that he’s back. It’s not just like, ‘Wow, that was cool,’ but legitimately celebrating in ways that I never ever, ever would have expected.
Before the interview, Wheaton wasn’t aware of Muro’s tweet. When presented with it during the interview, he didn’t harbor dislike towards the concept.
I’m not really interested in being an on-camera actor anymore, but I love being a voice actor. And I really, really love this animated Wesley Crusher. I love where he is in Prodigy. Honestly, I want more Prodigy. I want to see more of these kids. I want to see more of their story. I want to see more where that’s going. If that involves Travelers, yeah, I’ll show up.
Fans are strongly against giving up on Prodigy for a Travelers series due to the high cost of producing animated shows. It’s unlikely we can afford to run both at once. With Lower Decks ending after season five, there could be an opportunity to introduce Star Trek: Travelers instead, as suggested by the positive feedback Muro’s post received.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been blown away by Prodigy’s exceptional animation and captivating storytelling. With another series from the same talented team on the horizon and Wil Wheaton joining the cast, it’s safe to say that we’re in for a winning combination. Who knows, maybe even Dr. Beverly Crusher, played by the remarkable Gates McFadden, might make an appearance every now and then. What an exciting prospect!
