As a dedicated UFC fan, I have been eagerly anticipating the UFC 304 event taking place in Manchester, England. The media day on July 24th was a thrilling prelude to the big PPV, featuring two highly-anticipated title fights. In the co-main event, Tom Aspinall defends his interim heavyweight title against Curtis Blaydes, while UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards takes on Belal Muhammad in the main event.
On July 24, 2023 in Manchester, England, UFC 304 media day occurred before the anticipated PPV showdown. Two title bouts top the bill. In the secondary event, Tom Aspinall aims to keep his interim heavyweight crown against Curtis Blaydes. The primary event features UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards clashing with Belal Muhammad.
1. Curtis Blaydes thinks his fight with Tom Aspinall is the ‘real’ title fight
The bout between Aspinall and Blaydes, filling in as champions in the meantime, has sparked much debate. With Jon Jones, the undisputed titleholder, sidelined due to injury and set to face Stipe Miocic later, many viewers consider this encounter a genuine title contest. They’re frustrated with Jones for holding onto the belt during this interim period. Even Blaydes seems to acknowledge the significance of the match.
“Yes, I truly believe this is their final match in my perspective. In my mindset, Jones and Stipe are approaching retirement. To put it gently, they might be nearing the end of their fighting careers. This could possibly be their last big payday fight before they retire, which is understandable.”
2. Paddy Pimblett isn’t leaving the UFC anytime soon
During a recent interview, UFC fighter Paddy Pimblett raised concerns among fans when he suggested the possibility of leaving the UFC for lucrative fights outside the organization. With only one bout remaining under his current UFC contract, Pimblett took the opportunity at a media day to quell such speculation.
“What’s the reason for me departing from the UFC?” Pimblett questioned. “This gets twisted out of shape just like everything else I do. People create stories around even the simplest actions of mine and transform them. I can’t go to the bathroom without people exaggerating it and turning it into something scandalous, like ‘He defaced someone’s face in there.'”
He went on to explain, “Whatever I do, it can be taken out of context. In the interview, I made clear that my desire is to secure a new UFC contract. If someone offered me a large sum to box a YouTuber instead, well, we’re all in this business for the money. After all, we’re prizefighters.”
3. Tom Aspinall is over the UFC rankings system
I, as a dedicated gamer and avid MMA fan, can’t help but express my displeasure towards the UFC rankings system. It’s frustrating to see fighters, such as Jon Jones, remain in the rankings despite extended periods of inactivity.
“He questioned the validity of the pound-for-pound ranking, calling it nonsensical. ‘I don’t get it,’ Aspinall expressed, ‘How can we have such a ranking?'”
