As a dedicated IndyCar fan with years of experience following the series, I’m finding the shifting broadcast landscape increasingly challenging. The unpredictability of which races will be shown on what channels has become a source of frustration for me and many other fans.
Due to political news taking priority on NBC over the weekend, the Saturday race of the Iowa doubleheader had to be broadcast on CNBC instead. In contrast, the Sunday race of the same event was aired live on NBC two weeks ago.
Last weekend, the Toronto street race took place in the afternoon, but unlike previous years, it was exclusively streamed on Peacock. Fans had to buy a Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus subscription to catch the action.
IndyCar is currently taking a four-week hiatus during the summer months, as NBC is dedicated to broadcasting the Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
But even when action resumes, NBC is not set to air another race for almost a full month.
The IndyCar series’ next race, named the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, will take place at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway on August 17, and this event will be broadcasted on USA Network.
In simple terms, starting from the IndyCar season in 2022, USA Network replaced NBC Sports Network as the secondary NBCUniversal-owned channel that is utilized. NBC Sports Network ceased operations at the end of 2021.
At WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in late June, USA Network had been set to air the race, but due to the NASCAR Cup Series event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway being postponed because of rain, the race broadcast shifted to CNBC instead. Meanwhile, USA Network continued to show IndyCar racing during its originally scheduled time slot.
Before the last race, the USA Network had previously shown a race through the streets of Detroit, Michigan, around early June.
At the World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, the race this weekend is not the last one of the season. Four more races lie ahead in the calendar. NBC will be absent until the final event at Nashville Superspeedway on September 15.
I’m thrilled that USA Network will be broadcasting the Portland International Raceway event on August 25. That’s not all! They have another treat in store for us racing fans as they will also air the second race of the doubleheader from Milwaukee Mile on September 1.
On Saturday, August 31, Milwaukee will host its initial race of the year, marking the last Peacock-exclusive event for the season.
The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 is the upcoming IndyCar race in 2024, taking place at World Wide Technology Raceway. Catch the live action starting at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 17, only on USA Network. Sign up for a free FuboTV trial and be part of the excitement!
