5 things we learned from The Boys season 4 finale

As a longtime fan of comic books and action-packed storytelling, I’ve been hooked on The Boys since its debut. With each new season, I find myself more invested in the gritty, morally ambiguous world that the series creates.

The latest season of “The Boys” on Amazon Prime Video was extraordinarily wild, as evidenced by every episode. However, the finale of season 4 truly epitomized this description. Although IGN rated the final episode a 6 out of 10, it could easily be argued that it deserved an 9. The episode left us feeling both elated and uneasy with its epic and disturbing content.

At one point, it appeared that “The Boys” relied heavily on shock value, with scenes in “Life Among the Septics” and “Dirty Business” being particularly disturbing, even surpassing the limits set by “The Human Centipede.” Huey’s harrowing encounter with Tek Knight and Ashley in “Dirty Business” left him deeply traumatized. The narrative progressed slowly at times, and some subplots, such as those of Kimiko, Frenchie, and Marvin, seemed to regress rather than move forward. Nevertheless, despite its shortcomings, season 4 laid the groundwork for what could become a historically remarkable season 5, solidifying “The Boys” as one of the greatest shows ever made. In summary, here’s what we gleaned from the fourth installment.

5 things we learned from The Boys season 4 finale

1. Sister Sage is a calculating mastermind

In the fourth season of “The Boys,” Sister Sage made an explosive entrance. Her intelligence far surpasses that of an ordinary person, making her more than just a Superhero. Known as the “smartest person on the planet,” Sister Sage leaves an indelible mark. In one instant, she identifies Homelander’s health concerns based on his immaculate hand, and in another, she manipulates The Seven with ease, acting like a skillful puppeteer.

This season, Sister Sage took on the daring and intelligent role of Homelander’s antagonist, turning the storyline upside down. Previously, no one had the courage to confront or plot against Homelander. Sister Sage, however, not only matched him in confrontations but also provoked him like no other. Her strategy was straightforward: test the dominant figure, stir up trouble, and enjoy the ensuing turmoil.

As a longtime fan of “The Boys,” I’ve grown accustomed to the complexities and moral gray areas that define this gritty superhero storyline. And let’s not forget, even among the morally questionable characters, Sage stands out as a master manipulator. Her actions between Firecracker and Annie were brutal and left me on the edge of my seat. It seemed clear that Sage was just another villain in this world, but then Homelander showed her the way out.

As a dedicated fan of “The Boys,” I’ve been absolutely captivated by Sister Sage’s character. Her calculated strategies and icy presence have left me on the edge of my seat with every episode. Her storyline has taken me on a rollercoaster ride, demonstrating that intelligence can be just as powerful as strength in this ruthless world. It’s been an exhilarating experience to witness her cunning maneuvers and chilling impact on the show.

2. Starlight rebirth sees Annie rediscover herself

In Season 4, Annie January, also known as Starlight, has experienced a lot of ups and downs. She’s stepped out of the background and taken on a powerful and determined persona reminiscent of Carol Danvers. This storyline has explored her struggle with defining herself and coming to terms with past errors that still linger. It mirrors real-life challenges involving self-discovery and seeking forgiveness.

Right from the start, Annie’s experience has been filled with obstacles. In an important installment titled “Wisdom of the Ages,” she makes a significant move against Vought’s schemes, demonstrating her cleverness and newfound courage through a deal. However, her progress is marred by shocking acts of deceit. For instance, in “Dirty Business,” Annie faces off against Tek Knight and engages in a fierce battle with Firecracker, instigated by Sister Sage. This encounter unveils a tougher, more tenacious side of Starlight.

As I journey through the challenges of this game, I find Annie’s progression to be captivating. It’s not just about her growing stronger, but also about her grappling with moral dilemmas in a world that can feel devoid of fairness. With Butcher delving deeper into the shadows, Annie’s radiant ascent becomes an inspiring beacon for me, offering hope amidst the darkness.

In season 4, Starlight’s tale engages viewers with her combination of superhero valor and heartfelt personal battles. Her compelling storyline keeps us invested, cheering her on as she faces her trials head-on, demonstrating that giving up a part of oneself can be the initial step towards transforming into something more powerful. This character development adds depth to The Boys , and prepares the ground for thrilling future clashes, making Starlight a formidable figure in the series’ dark and intense world.

3. The new “Boys”

In simpler terms, the final hints suggest a significant transformation for The Boys team. A makeover is definitely underway, and the upcoming events promise to be intriguing. The Boys, as we knew them, seemed to disband, and it wasn’t only Butcher who underwent a change – though he was always a bit dark-hearted, his heart now appears to have been replaced with something sinister. Meanwhile, Marvin (Mother’s Milk) gets ambushed by an old enemy, leaving the fates of Frenchie and Huey uncertain. Starlight, however, finds herself in the perfect position for major shifts within the team.

Starlight is expected to take charge of the new squad, perhaps bringing back A-Train. Who else might be part of this team? With Gen V making a comeback and some previous students reappearing, it’s possible that some heroic members of Gen V will join the action.

An intriguing aspect arises from the enigmatic figures of Ashley and Edgar. Their erratic behavior introduces an exciting element to the group dynamics. Following their narrow escape from Vought’s massacre, we’re all on the edge of our seats, eagerly anticipating Ashley’s next move. In times of crisis, people take drastic actions, and Ashley’s transformation is no exception. Fans can’t help but wonder what her newfound abilities could be. Could she possess a hidden talent that allows her to wield her hair as a weapon? Perhaps she’ll engage in intellectual combat with Sister Sage, adding equilibrium to Team Good. Patience will be key as we wait for these developments to unfold.

Instead of “Edgar, on the other hand, has a personal vendetta. He wants to avenge the death of his daughter by bringing down the person responsible. Get ready for an intense showdown as we witness each dramatic turn of events unfold.”

4. Ryan’s family drama

Although they possess formidable abilities that strike terror, Ryan and Homelander share a common thread of emotional wounding – each lacking essential parts of their lives and lost loved ones. Furthermore, they found themselves manipulated, serving as pawns in the hands of those who entertained themselves at their expense.

Ryan’s slide into self-destructive behavior is astonishing given that he’s increasingly resembling his father. Admirably, his father had only aimed to provide him with things he lacked. When Homelander recognizes his errors, he makes an effort to correct them by encouraging Ryan to make independent decisions. Regrettably, when Ryan required Homelander’s support the most, he was absent.

I can’t help but empathize with Ryan’s situation, despite the regrettable actions he has taken. His entire life has been filled with manipulation and deception, leaving him bereft of the two most important people in his world: his mother and a loved one. It’s no surprise that this revelation has left him feeling disoriented and betrayed. The question is, what path will Ryan choose to follow? Will he succumb to the darkness, or will he remain morally ambiguous? Only time will tell as he prepares to confront his father about his mother’s fate. The anticipation is palpable; this encounter promises to be a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions.

As Homelander learns that his father, Soldier Boy, is still alive in cryostasis, their strained relationship may be mended. Although they had a tumultuous past, the possibility of Soldier Boy having the power to eliminate Homelander raises questions about which side he’ll choose. Regrettably, considering the ominous tone of “The Boys,” it wouldn’t be surprising if an unwilling Soldier Boy became Homelander’s second-in-command instead. With his military background and strong patriotism, it’s plausible that he could be manipulated into serving under his son.

The disturbing story of Soldier Boy, Homelander, and Ryan’s dysfunctional family is set to become even more harrowing. With limitless destructive abilities at their disposal, it’s only a matter of time before these three unravel chaos. It’s unsettling to think that at least two of them may meet tragic ends. As power struggles and acts of betrayal intensify among them, the family’s internal conflicts will undoubtedly take center stage in the unfolding narrative.

5. Empathetic villains are the best thing about The Boys

One striking aspect of “The Boys” season 4 is its ability to create compassionate antagonists. In a particular episode, a heartfelt conversation between Huey and Neuman shifts Neuman into a relatable character, though not one we can easily pardon. This layer of understanding makes her highly anticipated transformation seem authentic, suggesting a compelling path to redemption that unfortunately appears incomplete. Her multidimensionality significantly enriches the storyline, making her fall even more poignant.

As a devoted gamer following this intriguing show, I’ve noticed an impressive ability of its writers to transform fleeting instances into significant character progressions. Consider Homelander and A-Train for instance. In this latest season, Homelander has been grappling with the moral complexities of his powers and the repercussions of their usage, making us question our initial perceptions towards him. The heartfelt speech he gave Ryan was truly endearing – though he ultimately squandered that moment, it still left an impact.

Instead of “A-Train, on the other hand, faces his own moral dilemmas and struggles, but in the end, he comes through in the clutch,” you could say “Despite his personal challenges, A-Train manages to come through in crucial moments. He also attempts to help Ashley change her ways, but is unsuccessful. However, we can’t help but smile when we learn that A-Train has cut ties with his family.”

From a different perspective, The Deep and Noir appear headed for grim fates. Their behaviors in the show have marked them as beyond redemption, leaving viewers excited for their eventual downfall. Unlike A-Train, there’s no turning back for these characters. Considering how skillfully the writers have made their villains relatable, it’s reasonable to anticipate some fitting retribution.

All four seasons of The Boys are streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
