EastEnders star Roberta Taylor dies at the age of 76 after contracting an infection following a fall - as devastated fans pay tribute

As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of sadness and loss upon hearing about the passing of the brilliant Roberta Taylor. Her illustrious career in British television spanned decades, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire and entertain audiences.

EastEnders star Roberta Taylor has died at the age of 76.

The actress gained significant recognition for portraying Irene Raymond on the BBC soap opera from 1997 to 2000. Later, she joined the cast of The Bill, playing Inspector Gina Gold.

Based on Roberta’s obituary in The Guardian, she passed away on July 6 due to an infection resulted from a fall that occurred two months earlier. This infection worsened her pre-existing health issues, specifically pneumonia.

After her passing, she is survived by her actor spouse, Peter Guinness; their son, Elliott; a granddaughter; and two step-siblings.

Roberta’s last TV appearance came on the BBC private investigators comedy Shakespeare & Hathaway.

In 1997, she started appearing on EastEnders and joined the Hills family as their matriarch. She came to Walford to visit her children Sarah, played by Daniela Denby-Ashe, and Tony, portrayed by Mark Homer.

For three years, Roberta played the role of Irene on the soap opera, and during that time, her character had numerous romantic entanglements. One was with Terry Raymond, portrayed by Gavin Richards, and another was a passionate involvement with her lodger, Troy Harvey, played by Jamie Jarvis.

After spending three years as a cast member on EastEnders, Roberta felt it was time for a change. She shared her decision with The Mirror, explaining, “I found myself constantly asking, ‘When will I have the chance to memorize my lines?’ I had dedicated a significant portion of my life to the show, and if I continued at this pace, I would need to keep postponing other aspects of my life indefinitely.”

I wasn’t content with doing things halfway… My experience as Irene was incredibly enjoyable, and Gavin, our screen husband Terry, and I formed an excellent working relationship.

Irene was a woman with many layers. Her actions were unpredictable, reflecting the uncertainties of life itself. Despite appearing humorous to others, the depth of our interactions held a fair share of sharp wit and sarcasm.

Roberta slo had roles in dramas including Silent Witness, Inspector Morse and Doctors.

I divided from my initial spouse back in 1975 and established a residence in the heart of London, specifically in Pimlico. More recently, around two decades ago, I tied the knot with my second husband Peter in 1996 and moved to Vauxhall together.

The passing of Roberta led to an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from her fans on social media platforms such as X. Messages read, “So sad to hear about Roberta Taylor. She was brilliant in EastEnders and The Bill. May she rest in peace.”

“I’m deeply saddened to hear this news. I adored The Bill, and Gina Gold, portrayed superbly by Roberta Taylor, was an exceptionally well-crafted character.”

‘Real ones know Roberta Taylor by Gina Gold, not from EastEnders, RIP, what an actress;’

I’ve recently revisited some classic episodes of The Bill, and Roberta Taylor’s performances left me in awe. Sadly, I learned that she has passed away. My condolences go out to her loved ones; may she find peace.
