Rossi explained the full story to why he left the BAU in Criminal Minds: Evolution

As a long-time fan of “Criminal Minds,” I was absolutely blown away by the recent revelation about Jack Garrett’s (Matthew Gray Gubler) past with JJ (Amy Acker). For years, we’ve heard Garrett express his frustration with the red tape and desire to write books. Yet in a recent episode, the tables were turned when JJ suggested an affair between them.

Rossi had expressed his frustration with bureaucracy for quite some time, sharing his desire to write books instead. This led him to depart from the BAU team prior to the start of “Criminal Minds.” However, in a more recent episode, Jill Gideon surprised us all by reversing the situation.

Jill stated that Rossi had departed because she had shattered his emotions. She hinted at an extramarital involvement, and their heated exchange in his workplace gave rise to such speculation. Prentiss elected to probe Rossi on the subject, aiming for clarity on the situation.

While Rossi was not entirely forthcoming regarding his departure from the BAU, it’s clear that Jill exerted significant influence over Prentiss’s perception of the situation. However, Rossi eventually disclosed the true motivation behind his departure.

Rossi was in love with Jill in Criminal Minds: Evolution

Discovering a surprising truth, we found that some of Jill’s assertions held merit. Indeed, Rossi harbored deep feelings for her. Moreover, it’s plausible that she reciprocated those emotions. Yet, their connection remained strictly emotional, and they never engaged in a physical relationship.

During intense case investigations, Gideon’s behavior became volatile, causing tension among the team members. With a small unit consisting of only Rossi, Jill, and Gideon within the Behavioral Analysis Unit, they relied on each other for support during these challenging times.

Later on, Rossi expressed his disapproval towards how Gideon had been dealing with Jill. In his opinion, Jill deserved more respect and care, and he believed he could offer her that. Nevertheless, Jill and Gideon were attempting to save their marriage, so Rossi chose to keep a distance instead.

In due course, the Gideons went their separate ways. When this occurred, Rossi had already married his second spouse. Despite moving on, Rossi hadn’t fully recovered from his feelings for Jill. There was a suggestion in the episode that they could rekindle their relationship. However, Rossi discovered that Jill’s kiss was merely a ruse to help her execute her plan against Damien.

Yes, there was an emotional infidelity between Rossi and Jill. This led to Rossi’s decision to leave the situation. Fortunately, a physical affair never transpired between them before he departed.
