Michaela Coel confirms unexpected remake of “memorable” cult ’80s classic

Michaela Coel, known for her work on ‘Chewing Gum,’ is taking on a surprising new project: a remake of the 1980s action film Bloodsport. She’s writing and directing the movie, and working with the production company A24.

The 1988 film centers on Frank Dux, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, a US Army captain who began learning the art of ninjutsu as a child.

Dux receives an invitation to the Kumite, a secret and unlawful martial arts competition. Despite not having permission, he leaves the Army and travels to Hong Kong to compete, while two American government agents pursue him.

The movie Bloodsport was inspired by the story of Frank Dux, who also worked on the film as an action choreographer and technical advisor. He originally shared his experiences in Black Belt magazine, but the truthfulness of his story has since been questioned.

Details about Coel’s new version of the story are still secret, so we don’t yet know how it will be changed for modern viewers.

I’ve always been really impressed by fighters – the dedication, how hard they train, and the mental toughness it takes to do what they do is just amazing. It’s a really solitary sport too, which I find fascinating, honestly.

“I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S F**KING GO.”

As a gamer and movie fan, I remember Bloodsport being a total game-changer back in ’88 – it really brought that raw, intense feel of mixed martial arts to life. I’m super excited that the producer, Marc Toberoff, wants to bring back that same energy and tournament vibe to a new movie. It feels like a classic getting a reboot, and I’m definitely hoping it captures the same thrill!

Directed by Newt Arnold, Bloodsport has received mixed reviews and currently has a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 31 reviews.

Despite its predictable plot and sometimes questionable acting, Bloodsport features some genuinely thrilling fight scenes, according to the Los Angeles Times. Medium Popcorn agreed, describing the film as “very entertaining despite making absolutely no sense.”

One IMDB reviewer called the movie a remarkably impressive and unforgettable martial arts film.

One viewer said the movie was charming and simple, and really captured the feeling of a different era. Ultimately, it succeeded in being both entertaining and easy to enjoy.
