I had the privilege of watching her portrayal of Gillian Andrassy on “All My Children,” a character known for her tumultuous storyline and dramatic twists that kept viewers hooked.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m sad to share that Esta TerBlanche, a remarkable South African actor, passed away recently at the young age of 51. She gained widespread recognition for her exceptional portrayal of Gillian Andrassy in the popular U.S. daytime drama “All My Children.”
On Friday in Los Angeles, Lisa Rodrigo, a representative for TerBlanche, informed The Times that TerBlanche had passed away. The specific reason behind his demise is yet to be revealed, as we are still waiting for further information from the medical examiner.
“Upon hearing the news of Esta’s passing, I am deeply saddened. Her kindness and beauty will forever be remembered, leaving a gap in my life that can’t be filled. I felt fortunate to have her as both a client and a friend.”
TerBlanche, born on January 7, 1973, in Rustenburg, South Africa, was crowned Miss Teen South Africa in 1991. Later, she shifted her career towards acting and rose to fame portraying the character Bienkie Naudé Hartman in the widely-watched South African TV series “Egoli: Place of Gold” between 1992 and 1995.
In the year 1997, TerBlanche was cast as Gillian Andrassy on “All My Children,” a long-running soap opera. This series is based in the wealthy, fictional suburban community of Pine Valley, which is a part of Philadelphia. The narrative explores the intricate relationships and concealed secrets among various families. Throughout its existence, the show has tackled thought-provoking and culturally relevant themes, including abortion during the 1970s, AIDS in the 1980s, and same-sex marriage in the 2000s.
Andrassy, a complex character with a scandalous past and numerous shocking developments, made a deep mark on audiences before being excluded from the series in 2001. Later on, in 2011, TerBlanche reappeared for a moving guest spot as a spectral figure.
After going back to “All My Children,” TerBlanche shared with Soap Opera Digest the heartwarming feeling she and her ex-costar, Cameron Mathison (previously Ryan Lavery), experienced while collaborating once more.
Upon my return, a deeply emotional moment ensued for me and Cameron. Our reunion brought on an outpouring of tears as we hadn’t been in each other’s presence for many years. It was a heartfelt encounter between us.
TerBlanche featured in various roles on TV, including a part in “Spin City” on ABC, and hosted several South African programs like “Carte Blanche,” “Supermodel,” and “Wish You Were Here.”
She is survived by her father and her sister.
