As a long-time fan of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series and HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” I was thrilled to see the release of “House of the Dragon,” the prequel series that delves deeper into the history of Westeros. The sixth episode of season 2 brought a number of unexpected twists and turns, leaving me on the edge of my seat.
The sixth episode of “House of the Dragon” season 2 has been released, filled with intriguing twists for our characters. From unsuccessful dragon rides to food uprisings and hidden plots, there was a lot to process. Following the devastating Battle at Rook’s Rest and Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) becoming regent, the storyline is moving swiftly in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series.
As a passionate fan, I can tell you that in the recent episode, I witnessed a unique turn of events for Rhaenyra Targaryen, brilliantly portrayed by Emma D’Arcy. Previously, we’ve seen her engage in several relationships. Yet, this new connection stood out for various reasons. If you’re fresh from watching, you might be pondering some intriguing questions. Among them, whether this relationship is present in George R.R. Martin’s novel “Fire & Blood.” [SPOILERS AHEAD] To alleviate your curiosity, let me share some insights. Do Rhaenyra and Mysaria have a romance in the book?
In the passage above, I’d suggest paraphrasing it as follows:
In “Fire & Blood,” Mysaria is an intriguing figure who transforms from a sex worker in King’s Landing into one of Rhaenyra’s most trusted advisors. However, her journey takes a unique turn in the show, leading to a distinct variation in her bond with Rhaenyra. In the novel, Mysaria collaborates with Daemon on his Blood and Cheese scheme, but she remains in King’s Landing during this period. Unlike the book, where Mysaria doesn’t join Rhaenyra at Dragonstone until later, she assists Daemon during the early stages of the war. Once Rhaenyra claims King’s Landing, Mysaria emerges as her chief confidant, acting as her master of whispers in all but title.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: When Mysaria arrives at court, I, Rhaenyra, allow Daemon to carry on with their old relationship. It’s not mentioned that I engage in an intimate connection with Mysaria myself, but rather that I trust and approve of their bond in my unique way.
Although not depicted in “House of the Dragon,” Rhaenyra Targaryen is suggested to have had an intimate relationship with Laena Velaryon, Daemon’s former wife, as hinted in “Fire & Blood.” The show featured only one episode where Laena appeared as an adult, and there was no interaction between her and Rhaenyra on screen. It seems likely that this subplot was eliminated due to the first season being overburdened with content and unable to adequately explore it.
Although Rhaenyra’s relationship with Laena in the book suggests that she is bisexual, the two women are never directly stated to be together. In “House of the Dragon,” this subtext is developed further through Rhaenyra’s connection with a different character. This change feels organic and remains consistent with Rhaenyra’s character as portrayed in the novel. If the show decides to include Daemon and Mysaria’s reunion, the existing chemistry between Rhaenyra and Mysaria could add depth to their dynamic. Among the many adaptations made by “House of the Dragon,” this modification is one of the most intriguing to me.
In the last two episodes of “House of the Dragon” season 2, which are broadcast every Sunday night on HBO and Max, we’ll find out what lies ahead for Rhaenyra and Mysaria.
