Hush (2016)
- Directed by: Mike Flanagan
- Where to watch: Hush is coming to digital on Aug. 27, 2024
As a horror enthusiast who has spent countless hours watching films of the genre, I firmly believe that some slasher gems have been overlooked by the masses. Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, I hold a special place in my heart for these types of movies. Let me share with you three underrated slashers that have left a lasting impression on me.
The film “Hush,” which was released on Netflix in April 2016 and received favorable criticism from critics, is often overlooked when discussions revolve around the greatest slasher films. In my opinion, this is an issue worth addressing.
In a chilling turn of events, deaf-mute horror writer and scream queen Kate Siegel shines as the protagonist who stumbles into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with an unidentified intruder. This ominous figure invades her home under cover of darkness one fateful night. Alongside Siegel in this chilling tale are John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, and Emma Graves, who round out the captivating cast.

The 2009 film “My Bloody Valentine 3D” is a modern take on the 1981 slasher movie with the same title. Set in a small town, it follows the residents who become victims of a brutal killer with a pickaxe and mining attire on Valentine’s Day. The cast includes Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith, Kevin Tighe, Tom Atkins, and Edi Gathegi, bringing this chilling horror story to life.
Maniac (1980)
- Directed by: William Lustig
- Where to watch: Tubi for free, Shudder, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
As a gamer, I’d describe “Maniac” as a chilling slasher experience that may not be for the faint-hearted. In this grisly tale, a deeply disturbed individual named Frank takes center stage. Raised in neglect by his mother, Frank’s troubled past shapes him into a relentless serial killer. He stalks, murders, and scalps his victims in the bustling streets of New York City. Growning up, I couldn’t help but feel empathy for Frank as he endured unimaginable abuse. But as he descends deeper into madness, it becomes clear that this once innocent child has become a monster. The late Joe Spinell delivers an unforgettable performance as the hauntingly real Frank Zito.
