‘Buffy’ Stars Pay Tribute to Nicholas Brendon After Star’s Tragic Death

The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fan community has experienced a period of sadness. Michelle Trachtenberg, a long-time cast member, passed away in February 2025 due to complications from diabetes. Just over a year later, her co-star Nicholas Brendon died unexpectedly in his sleep, following a 2023 diagnosis of a congenital heart defect. Brendon was a significant figure in television, appearing in nearly every episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and also playing a memorable supporting role on “Criminal Minds” for seven seasons.

After news of Brendon’s death on March 20th, many stars from both shows shared tributes. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred alongside him in Buffy, posted a quote from one of his well-known monologues on Instagram, writing that she hoped he was “at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”

Alyson Hannigan, known from How I Met Your Mother, expressed her gratitude to Brendon, fondly recalling years of shared laughter, affection, and their mutual love for the Los Angeles Dodgers. She added that she’ll always remember him whenever she sees a rocking chair.

Emma Caulfield, known for her role as Anya Jenkins, shared that she was deeply saddened by the news and found it difficult to express how much it affected her.

Charisma Carpenter, a colleague of Brendon’s, shared a heartfelt post about his passing, including photos of them together from the set. She remembered him as warm, funny, and incredibly talented, noting his good taste in music and his spontaneous personality. She ended by sending her sympathy to his family, friends, and all the fans who enjoyed his work.

I’ll always cherish the memory of the man he used to be – so kind, affectionate, and full of life. He was playful, hilarious, humble, and incredibly gifted. I loved every moment we shared acting together; he constantly challenged me to improve by keeping me engaged and never repeating himself. I picture him vividly in his trailer, door open, relaxing in his rocking chair with a cigarette and music playing. From my window, I could hear all the iconic 90s bands that now remind me of him – Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters, OMC, Green Day, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Sublime, Creed, Barenaked Ladies, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cranberries, Lauryn Hill, Blink-182, 311, Blur, Garbage, Counting Crows, and the Goo Goo Dolls. I deeply miss those times and hold onto those memories. My heart goes out to his family, his close friends who were with him at the end, and all the fans who found joy in his work.

David Boreanaz, a main cast member, expressed his sadness over Brendon’s death, saying he was more than just a colleague – he was someone you genuinely enjoyed spending time with. Boreanaz highlighted Brendon’s authenticity, emphasizing that he had a naturally impactful presence without even trying.

Kirsten Vangness, known for her role on Criminal Minds, paid tribute to her co-star and on-screen love interest. She fondly remembered being excited when he joined the show and expressed her sadness at the news of his passing. Vangness shared that she plans to revisit his work and is grateful for the time they spent together.

Kevin Lynch complemented Penelope perfectly, making her shine. As a big ‘Buffy’ fan, I was thrilled when Nicholas Brendon was cast as my boyfriend. It’s heartbreaking to hear of his passing, especially knowing how much life he still had to live. I’ll always cherish rewatching his performances and feel lucky our paths crossed. Sending strength and peace to everyone affected by this loss.

The team at MovieWeb sends its deepest condolences to Brendon’s family, his friends, and his fans.
