NASCAR on the verge of a new Cup Series points leader?

As a dedicated NASCAR fan with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen some thrilling seasons unfold before my eyes. And the 2024 Cup Series season is shaping up to be one for the history books!

During the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, a total of seven drivers took the lead in the point standings at various times. Notably, each of these drivers had previously held the top spot in their careers before this season began.

More recently, Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson from Hendrick Motorsports have taken turns leading the races, with both drivers sharing the top spot at various points. At an earlier stage this season, William Byron, another teammate of theirs, held the lead in the standings.

Among the other leaders in the racing season are Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex from Joe Gibbs Racing, Ryan Blaney of Team Penske, and Kyle Busch from Richard Childress Racing. However, Kyle Busch currently falls short of making it to the playoffs.

A driver who hasn’t led a race this season and currently holds the highest position in the standings is none other than Tyler Reddick from 23XI Racing. Surprisingly, he’s the only one among the top-ranked drivers who has never taken the lead during his entire career.

Tyler Reddick on the verge of the points lead?

Reddick, driving the No. 45 Toyota, has been a strong contender each week and now trails Elliott by only 15 points and Larson by 12. He may not have secured more than one victory this season, which he achieved at Talladega Superspeedway in April, but he consistently positions himself at the front of the pack.

In his five full seasons as a Cup Series driver, the 28-year-old from Corning, California hasn’t had a great beginning, with only one top 20 finish in the first two races to show for it. However, things have improved significantly lately. Over the past eight races, he has managed an impressive seven top eight finishes.

In the past three races, Reddick has placed higher than Elliott and Larson. Furthermore, he hasn’t come in last among the three drivers in any of the previous five races.

After a disappointing performance by Elliott in the last four races, as he failed to finish in the top eight, and Larson dealing with inconsistency in the nine most recent events, resulting in only five finishes better than 34th place, Reddick may emerge as the eighth unique leader of the season points standings and the first-time points leader of the year.

At the close of the normal season, the driver with the most points receives a bonus of 15 points in the playoffs before the four-event, ten-race championship series. This extra point total equates to winning three races outright.

As a seasoned race enthusiast who has participated in numerous competitions throughout my life, I can tell you that every point matters, especially when it comes to the final standings. The runner-up, having given their all during the regular season, scores an impressive ten points. This gap between first and second place is equivalent to winning an entire race, a fact that underscores the intensity and competitiveness of the sport.

In today’s playoff system, securing victories is crucial. However, the points competition holds significance as well. Although Reddick isn’t very accustomed to this fight, he intends to leave a significant mark on Hamlin and Michael Jordan’s squad in this aspect during the current season.

As a long-time NASCAR enthusiast and avid race fan, I’m thrilled to share that one of the most anticipated events on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar is just around the corner. The Brickyard 400, which will mark its 22nd appearance on the 36-race schedule, holds a special place in my heart. Having attended several races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I can attest to the electrifying energy that fills the air during this iconic event.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Reddick secured the front spot for the race’s starting lineup (check it out here). Begin your free trial with FuboTV right away and witness the first Cup Series event on Indy’s oval since two thousand and twenty!
