Formula 1: Hungarian Grand Prix not being broadcast on ESPN2
As a dedicated Formula 1 fan and avid gamer, I’ve grown accustomed to following every race of the season, no matter where or when they take place. However, the recent scheduling changes have tested my patience. The four-race absence of Formula 1 on ESPN was the longest such stretch during this record-breaking 24-race 2024 season. But finally, after a two-week hiatus, ESPN is back with the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.
During the 2024 Formula 1 season’s remarkable run of 24 races, a four-race absence from ESPN aired the longest stretch. Recently, ESPN broadcasted two successive races before ESPN2 took over for the fourth time in its seven-race plan, which occurred two weekends ago at Silverstone Circuit.
After the live broadcast of the British Grand Prix on ESPN2, ESPN returns this week for the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.
At Mogyorod, Hungary, this upcoming race with its 14 turns and 2.722-mile (4.381-kilometer) track, making up a total of 70 laps, signifies the commencement of the second half of the season for us. Notably, ESPN will be airing this event, marking the longest continuous stretch on our 2024 calendar with six consecutive races, occupying precisely half of our broadcast schedule.
Hungarian Grand Prix not on ESPN2
For the next six consecutive races on ESPN, which makes up half of ESPN’s racing broadcasts this year, comes after this point. Following that, ESPN will only oversee the broadcasting of one remaining race in the season, specifically the Las Vegas Grand Prix held at the Las Vegas Strip Street Circuit on November 24.
After the ongoing racing series, ABC will oversee the last two races of the season. Meanwhile, ESPN2 will broadcast three out of the final four races, except for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which will wrap up the 2024 Formula One season, is set for Sunday, December 8 at Yas Marina Circuit.
As a longtime sports enthusiast who has spent countless hours glued to my television set watching various live sporting events on different channels, I can attest to the fact that the Sky Sports coverage provided to ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC in the United States is consistently the same. This sameness in programming is a testament to the efficient and streamlined operations of these networks, ensuring that viewers like myself, no matter which channel we choose to watch, receive high-quality and comprehensive coverage of our favorite races and sports events. It’s a small convenience that can make a big difference in the viewing experience for dedicated fans like me.
Beginning at 8:55 a.m. ET this coming Sunday, July 21, ESPN will broadcast live coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix from the Hungaroring. Previous three-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull is the two-time victor of this race. (Sign up for) a free FuboTV trial now if you haven’t done so yet!
