As a long-time Star Trek fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming “Star Trek: Voyager” documentary. This groundbreaking series holds a special place in my heart, not just because it was the first to feature a woman as a starship captain, but also because of its compelling storylines and fascinating characters that captured my imagination.
Star Trek: Voyager holds a significant place in the Star Trek franchise with its groundbreaking elements. It marked the first time a woman took the helm as the lead of a Star Trek production, and she was also the first to captain a ship on the show. Additionally, this series represented Paramount’s initial attempt to establish their broadcast/streaming service, which launched as UPN in 1995.
In more simple terms, the significance of Voyager to the Star Trek franchise and science fiction has become more apparent over time. Many now view it as the pioneering and innovative show that set the stage for future series. Its stories were captivating, its characters complex and thought-provoking, and each episode offered a fun sci-fi experience. Voyager truly paved the way, even if its impact was recognized later on.
In 2021, David Zappone and some others aimed to share the story of Voyager through a documentary project. They initiated a GoFundMe campaign to finance this production, titled “To the Journey.” This endeavor served as a follow-up to the successful Deep Space Nine documentary, “What We Left Behind.”
Three years have passed since we last heard any news about the release of the Voyager documentary. As reported by TrekMovie.com, they’ve obtained information from Zappone that the plan is to premiere this initial cut of the film in London, New York, and another London location, likely in November 2024. These screenings will be exclusively for the project’s major supporters who are able to attend these cities. Further details regarding the specifics of these events are predicted to be shared at STLV, the annual Star Trek convention held in Las Vegas.
Starting next spring in 2025, DVD sales of the home release will officially begin. A theatrical release, which may serve as a prelude, is anticipated to take place before that date. This could be similar to past Star Trek projects with brief theater runs, such as Phantom Events’ screening of The Best of Both Worlds two-parter in 2013.
