Fans have been waiting a long time, but they’ve finally gotten a first look at the Punisher alongside Spider-Man. Frank Castle first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man comics, and the upcoming debut of Brand New Day on July 31, 2026, will be the first time these two characters share the screen, either within or outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on the trailer, it seems like Frank Castle might be taking on the role of Peter Parker’s closest friend, similar to how Ned Leeds used to be.
Even though the Punisher and Spider-Man have a history of teaming up in comics, some people questioned whether a street-level collaboration would work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man perfectly portrays the character’s youthful energy and strong moral compass, while Jon Bernthal’s Punisher represents a much darker, more cynical approach to fighting crime. However, the surprisingly good chemistry between the actors, and what their characters’ relationship represents, might be exactly what makes a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Spider-Man trilogy feel right. There’s a telling moment where Peter Parker casually uses Frank Castle’s first name, showing a level of comfort he doesn’t share with his closer friends like Ned, MJ, or even Bruce Banner.
In the Four-Year Gap Since Spider-Man Lost His Identity, Peter Parker Hasn’t Moved On
Following the events of No Way Home, the movie explores what happens to MJ and Ned as they start college without Peter Parker. While Peter still exists, he’s distanced from their lives, observing from afar but unable to fully participate. A quick shot at the end hints that Peter might eventually reveal their shared history to them. However, even if he does, their friendship will be forever changed.
Okay, so the trailer gave us a glimpse of Bruce Banner, and the way he interacts with Peter is really telling – he clearly has no idea who Spider-Man is! It really solidifies the idea that even though Peter fought with the Avengers, he’s back to being a neighborhood hero, dealing with street-level threats. He’s still famous, though – they even give him a key to the city, which is a nice nod to Spider-Man 3. That explains why the Punisher doesn’t even try to kill Spider-Man with that Battle Van of his – it’s just a way to mess with him, and Peter’s reaction totally proves it. Later on, Frank Castle actually sounds worried about Peter, which is huge considering he usually only cares about Karen Page. He straight-up tells him, “You’re losing it, kid,” and it’s a surprisingly concerned moment.
It’s unclear exactly how involved he is, but Kingpin hinted at the Punisher’s existence back in Season 1. If the task force dedicated to tracking vigilantes is still operating, it might explain why Spider-Man simply tells Frank Castle to leave instead of handing him over to the police. This short conversation feels similar to the frustrated dynamic between Daredevil and the Punisher. Like Daredevil, Spider-Man doesn’t agree with the Punisher’s methods and tries to stop him when possible. While they aren’t formal partners, they’re both working to fight crime in New York City. Frank Castle essentially serves the same role as Ned Leeds for Spider-Man, but with firearms instead of technology.
Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland Have Established Chemistry, and It’s Perfect for Spider-Man
It’s interesting that Frank Castle might become a mentor to Peter Parker, considering the actors who play them, Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland, worked together on the film Pilgrimage before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They had great on-screen chemistry in that movie, and that connection carried over when they auditioned for Marvel. In fact, they supported and motivated each other to land those iconic roles. When they finally share the screen as their respective characters in Brand New Day, it will highlight just how much Peter Parker has changed and how far he’s fallen.
So far in each movie, an experienced Avenger has taken Peter Parker under their wing, but their relationship has always been a bit challenging – think Tony Stark, Talos posing as Nick Fury, and Doctor Strange. While Spider-Man admired these heroes, he also pushed back against them. Despite damaging the Battle Van and telling Punisher to leave, Spider-Man probably interacts with Frank Castle more than any other street-level hero in the MCU, similar to his relationships with other red-suited characters. Even so, Frank has to acknowledge Spider-Man’s dedication to doing what’s right.
As a huge cinema fan, I’ve been thinking about something interesting in Brand New Day. There’s a moment where the Punisher actually tries to save Spider-Man, and it got me wondering… could Frank Castle become a twisted mentor figure for Peter? We saw how much he tried to push Matt Murdock down a darker path, encouraging him to kill, and I can see a similar dynamic potentially brewing here. But honestly, no matter how tough things get for Peter – losing Aunt May, MJ, and Ned would be devastating – I just can’t see him ever crossing that line. Still, the fact that Frank believes he could convince Spider-Man to take a life really highlights just how broken Frank is after everything that’s happened in the last four years.
Spider-Man’s Brand New Day Metamorphosis Is Tied to His Friendship with Frank Castle
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I found something really fascinating in the latest film. It strongly hints that Peter Parker is actually changing at a fundamental level. Bruce Banner’s warning about mutating DNA, shown while Peter’s being scanned, definitely got my attention. But even more exciting, the scene of Peter waking up in a web cocoon suggests he’s finally grown organic web-shooters – something fans have wanted to see for ages! I’m expecting a classic comic book-style explanation – probably a blend of science and maybe even a little magic – to explain it all. What’s really cool, though, is how this transformation subtly connects Peter’s story to his unlikely friendship with Frank Castle, adding a deeper layer to their relationship.
It’s scary to think about what Peter Parker could become if he lost his way, but some hints suggest it might be more than just a change in personality. There’s a lot of talk that the new movie is drawing from the ‘Neogenic Nightmare’ storyline, which involves Peter actually becoming more spider-like. We’ve already seen organic web-shooters, but it could go much further – extra arms, or even a truly monstrous transformation. It seems like this physical change we’re seeing in the trailer isn’t just random; it’s a way of showing how Peter is struggling with his morals. He’s even letting someone like Frank Castle, a murderer, get away with things, because he’s afraid of being completely alone, both as Spider-Man and as Peter Parker.
Following the events of No Way Home, where Peter Parker made a huge sacrifice to protect everyone, the trailer for Brand New Day suggests he’s now choosing to live a solitary life. We see him blending into crowds, seemingly cut off from his former friends and family. Even a seemingly lighthearted scene with Spider-Man and Frank Castle has a somber undertone. Unless they’ve formed a connection, the Peter Parker we know would have done more than just silence Frank. It appears Peter lets Frank go, despite knowing he’ll likely continue to be violent, possibly due to the pain caused by the events of the VTF, a fear of being alone, or a combination of both.
Considering the history of comics and the presence of ninja groups resembling the Hand, it’s possible Spider-Man isn’t the only character undergoing a monstrous change in the movie. This could mean Frank is being controlled by them. It makes sense that Spider-Man would try to save Frank from this transformation, but doing so might create a different kind of problem – potentially swapping one monster for another. Peter Parker might save his friend from becoming a monster, but at the risk of becoming one himself.
