As a long-time gamer with a deep appreciation for both platformers and role-playing games, I can’t help but be amazed by the sheer dedication and creativity of Jamie Colliver. Ten years after the release of Little Big Planet 2, this passionate fan has taken on an incredible feat: remaking the entirety of Final Fantasy 7 within the game.

In the past, before the arrival of user-friendly game development tools such as Unreal Engine in Fortnite and Roblox, individuals expressed their creativity differently; through platforms like LittleBigPlanet.

Today, over a decade since the launch of “LittleBigPlanet 2,” an artistically inclined player has painstakingly recreated the entirety of the original “Final Fantasy 7” inside this game.

The remarkable project brings a new life to and recreates the initial part of “Final Fantasy 7” piece by piece. Jamie Colliver has painstakingly reproduced every detail, including Cloud’s spiky hair and Nobuo Uematsu’s famous themes, in “Little Big Planet 2”.

Creating such a project is truly a remarkable feat. The original “Final Fantasy 7” lasts approximately 36 hours, boasts an extensive world map with various territories, and reportedly includes over 130,000 words of dialogue – all of which Colliver included in his remake according to one source.

Using the tools in Little Big Planet 2, we can convert the game into a platformer rather than an exact replica. It’s important to note that this transformation does not include turn-based combat. Instead, characters are able to execute attacks which diminish a boss’s health by a specific amount.

Colliver represents iconic Final Fantasy settings, such as Wall Market’s grimy shantytown, by constructing blocks with rough textures to mimic a junkyard or creating neon-lit signs. Although these depictions do not fully replicate the game’s art and textures from the PlayStation version, they successfully convey the unique atmosphere of each location.

Colliver explained to TopMob via email, “I put in considerable effort in determining which elements should be in the foreground, midground, and background for an accurate portrayal of each location’s perspective. Wutai posed a significant challenge due to its immense size as a continent, numerous scenes, and concealed paths, resulting in a complicated planning process.”

Alongside revamping the settings, Colliver faced limitations on the size of each level in “LittleBigPlanet 2”. (Or) In “LittleBigPlanet 2”, Colliver wasn’t just responsible for redesigning the environments; he also had to deal with restrictions on the sizes of each level.

Colliver explained that due to the constraint of accommodating numerous characters in limited areas, some levels had to be divided into smaller parts. Space for storage was also a significant challenge, which influenced the size of each level. As a result, he had to design the overall structure of the levels before adding intricate details.

Colliver devoted an enormous amount of time and effort, approximately three and a half years, to completing the project for TopMob. He was driven solely by his deep-rooted affection for the original “Final Fantasy 7”.

Colliver expressed, “My project is an heartfelt homage to the classic PS1 edition of Final Fantasy 7. I’m eager for audiences to experience each significant and minor detail brought to life by a devoted admirer.”
