The show The Boys has been a wild ride – a fantastic series, but also bittersweet knowing it’s ending after five seasons. Originally based on a thought-provoking and often shocking comic book by Garth Ennis, the show explored a realistic and gritty take on what superheroes would actually be like.
Unlike typical superhero teams with strong morals, like those led by Captain America, The Boys presented a darkly twisted take on the Superman archetype – a truly villainous version. The show also fearlessly tackled difficult topics like the dangers of unchecked capitalism, corporate corruption, and sexual assault. It’s been a wildly popular and shocking series, and fans are hoping the fifth and final season maintains the same level of intense action and outrageous moments as before.
What Happened in The Boys Season 4?
From the very start of the series, The Boys has centered around Billy Butcher – a character brilliantly portrayed by Karl Urban – and his journey fueled by good intentions gone awry. Driven by the tragic loss of his wife, caused by the actions of Homelander, Butcher dedicated himself to fighting against all superheroes.
He assembled a mismatched team of people, all driven to do what they believed was right, even if their motives weren’t pure. But as time went on, Butcher himself started to resemble the villains he was trying to defeat, a predictable development for the audience.
Throughout the season, he stayed in touch with his former ally, Joe Kessler, which led to a surprising and satisfying turn of events. Kessler, who had become a manipulative influence on Butcher, urged him to eliminate all superpowered individuals before they could potentially cause a mass killing.
Butcher was already dying from brain cancer, a result of his exposure to Compound V24 the previous season. Driven by his desire to see all Supes eliminated before he passed away, he dedicated himself to creating a virus that would target and kill those with powers.
The virus originated from research conducted by Dean Shetty. This plot point continued into Season 4 of The Boys, where it was revealed Victoria Neuman’s daughter’s father was experimenting with it. Recognizing this, Butcher kidnapped Sameer Shah and pressured him to keep working on the virus that combats superpowered individuals. The season ended with the shocking discovery that Kessler wasn’t real, but a hallucination caused by Butcher’s cancer.
Butcher crossed a line when he used his powers to kill Victoria Neuman and steal the virus, setting his sights on eliminating all remaining supes. This was a shocking development, especially after Hughie spent the season encouraging everyone to choose compassion and avoid further conflict. Hughie believed decency could overcome a dangerous, oppressive system, but Butcher ignored his better judgment and gave in to his own destructive impulses.
The Butcher’s actions were terrible, but someone else was getting dangerously close to achieving their goals. The season finale showed Sister Sage’s master plan in full. Once it became public that Neuman had superpowers, President-Elect Robert Singer tried to have her killed. He was caught on camera and arrested, which led to Steven Calhoun, a supporter of Homelander, becoming the new President.
The President quickly imposed martial law and gave Homelander complete control. This meant Homelander could attack anyone who opposed superheroes, especially the Boys. By the end of the season, all members of the Boys were captured except for Annie and Butcher, who were forced to go into hiding. This dramatic turn of events promises an unmissable final season of The Boys.
Who Stars in Amazon Prime’s The Boys?
The fifth season of The Boys will bring back the show’s core cast, who’ve been central to the series since the beginning. Karl Urban returns as Billy Butcher, now a fugitive with a dangerous virus that can kill superpowered individuals. Urban’s convincing Cockney accent is a stark contrast to his previous, more upright roles, like Bones from Star Trek. Just as important to the show’s dynamic is Hughie Campbell, and like Hughie, Butcher is essential to The Boys‘ success.
Jack Quaid is back as Hughie, a character who always tries to do what’s right, even though he’s made some questionable choices. Last season, Hughie dealt with the loss of his father and reconnected with the mother who left him as a child. These experiences led him to the decision that he wants to end the cycle of violence.
The team, known as ‘The Boys,’ will also include Mother’s Milk, Frenchie, and Kimiko in the upcoming season. Tomer Capone and Karen Fukuhara will return as the popular pair, Frenchie and Kimiko.
Despite facing challenges, their connection remained strong. Laz Alanso will once again be the voice of reason, and M.M., portrayed by Erin Moriarty, is now a full member of the team after being held captive for much of Season 4. While her powers were failing, a shapeshifter pretended to be her, but she eventually recovered and managed to escape Homelander’s attack.
Antony Starr delivers a chilling performance as the main villain. We can also expect to see Chace Crawford, Jessie T. Usher, and Nathan Mitchell reprise their roles as The Deep, A-Train, and Black Noir. A major highlight of Season 5 will be the arrival of Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, known for their work on Supernatural.
Jared Padalecki and Samantha Smith are joining Eric Kripke, the creator of Supernatural, along with returning stars Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. While their roles haven’t been revealed, a clue at the end of Season 4 suggested that Padalecki’s character wasn’t actually dead, a hint that was later confirmed in promotional material for Season 5.
When Does The Boys Season 5 Premiere?
The highly anticipated final season of The Boys will begin streaming on April 8, 2026. Following Amazon’s usual release strategy, several episodes will be available immediately, followed by a weekly release schedule. The season will kick off with a two-episode premiere on April 8th and wrap up in May 2026. This final installment promises a dramatic conclusion, pushing the characters to their absolute limits and marking the end of an era.
The trailer for Season 5 shows that, despite everything Butcher has done, the Boys ultimately believe working with him is worth it. Homelander has become a tyrant ruling over America, and the only solution is for the Boys to join forces with Butcher one final time, even if it’s difficult.
The trailer revealed the Boys have escaped Homelander, but are now on the run. They decide to join forces with Butcher while Homelander continues to cause chaos. The upcoming season promises more of the darkly comedic and thrilling moments that have defined the show for the last four seasons.
It’s clear Homelander needs to be stopped, especially since he seemed more unstable than ever in the latest trailer. The trailer also featured Soldier Boy alongside Jared Padalecki, who previously co-starred with him on Supernatural. Their silent interaction left viewers wondering about Padalecki’s role. Adding to the show’s intense and often shocking nature, we also saw Ashley as Secretary of State and the Deep visibly upset over a dead fish.
As a huge fan of The Boys, I’m bracing myself for the final season! We can definitely expect more of Homelander doing what he does best – basically, a lot of violent punching and generally being covered in blood. From what I’ve heard, the showrunners are planning to deliver on everything they’ve been building towards. Honestly, though, what’s really got me thinking is that when The Boys is over, it feels like we’ll lose one of the few shows really tackling important political issues with this kind of boldness. That’s a bit of a shame, really.
